Knicks, Bulls want D'Antoni

The Knicks and Bulls may lock horns in a bidding war for Suns coach Mike D'Antoni. According to a source close to the Suns coach, D'Antoni is expecting to receive formal proposals from the Knicks and Bulls by week's end. At least that's what he hopes. The imminent nature of these two offers likely was urged by D'Antoni, who has been told by Suns GM Steve Kerr the club wants a decision by Friday.

D'Antoni should stay with the Suns. Why would he want to downgrade to the Knicks, that are a losing team without good players? The Bulls are somewhat attractive because they have a young team with potential, and they are a big-city market. However, you can't beat the sunny weather and already-developed team in Phoenix.

Oops. Turns out that the Suns don't want D'Antoni any longer. That's a shame. The Suns should have kept him longer.
If he has to go somewhere else, he should put the Warriors at the top of his list, and the Bulls second. The Knicks should be the bottom of the list.

Yeah I don't think D'Antoni wants a piece of the Knicks when the Bulls and Raptors are playoff caliber teams already.

As a Knicks fan I think we should look at Avery Johnson a bit more

Not the best teams to coach at this point. Hopefully more options open up.

May 7, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Cant be all that true, the other article says they put him on hold for avery johnson...

"Not the best teams to coach at this point. Hopefully more options open up"

Um- the 'best' teams are still in the playoffs- and are not opening up -

I think D'A is a good coach- can't deny his winning percentage.
Only question is - did he win because he had the players....or did his system 'make' the players

Bottom line for the knicks is that thier current roster is abominable....
it doesn't matter what system is in place, they aren't winning anytime soon. They need to play only players who might be here past 2-3 years, let everyone else ride the pine, collect their $ & see what an embarassment they turned this franchise into

I think if you're Mike D'antoni, you have to take the Chicago deal. New York has a lot of money to throw around, but that clubhouse is in shambles. In Chicago, D'antoni inherits a group of young talent that he can mold better than Skiles ever could. D'antoni isn't the greatest salesman in the world and New York has corrupt management, so I wouldn't expect that coach/GM combination to bring in better players immediately. Chicago is a team on the cusp of a new era. They just need guidance and a system in place. D'antoni can provide that and make the few offseason moves necessary for Chicago to prosper (i.e. Ben Gordon, cash and a draft pick for an All-star and a role player)

The Suns have given D'Antoni a deadline it appears. The boss says to get out of town by sundown. Must be a different world though when you make seven figures annually. But anything must be better than the Knicks.

D'Antoni is considered a good coach and many teams would want him. Coaching a team that is full of underachievers or another team that is really crappy may not be the best decision. An argument could be made in favor of coaching Chicago, but that is if the contract issues are settled and the players try to work together to go to the playoffs. I think he should just avoid NY at all costs.

News Flash: The Hawks announced today that...... nothing is happening ...... great job addressing your coaching and GM issue quickly!

The Knicks and the Bulls are not contenders right now. Hiring D'Antoni will hopefully guarantee a high flying fan friendly brand of basketball that will fill seats and owners' wallets!!! D'Antoni is the best economic and marketing move, not necessarily the best coaching move.

I think Woodson did the best he could do with what he had available. The team went to the Playoffs, and took the Celtics to 7 games. He deserves another year.

Dude, have you been listening to Liontut? The very last thing the Knicks need is a coach that doesn't even have defense in his vocabulary. D'Antoni's "7 seconds or less" offense worked in Phoenix because he had Nash and Stoudemire. Phoenix doesn't want him back because contrary to popular belief, you MUST play defense to be successful in today's NBA. The Knicks play no defense, they don't rebound, and you want D'Antoni? Get real.

Sorry JL: it wasn't your post I was reading.

May 7, 2008  12:33 PM ET

he is going to the bulls. the bulls have a better roster with younger players

May 7, 2008  12:50 PM ET

D'Antoni is going to rock whatever franchise does land him, maybe except the Knicks... If you are not good at your job, you don't change a team the way he did with PHX - not even if you get Nash (and he was the one giving the Canadian that contract), as everybody in Dallas can tell you...

May 7, 2008  01:16 PM ET

Hllwd,
Does defense mean what we saw last night in Boston?? If so, ship that crud to Europe.
D'Antoni should take over the Hawks if you want a good fit. Want defense, hire Avery and hope he doesn't lose the team after 3 yrs.

May 7, 2008  01:53 PM ET

D'A would be a good fix in Chicago because Chicago is loaded with a small line-up that he could use in his up tempo small ball system. Defense wins championships everyone knows that but with an Eastern Conference being as weak now as it will be in the future (both Boston and Detroit probably the only two title contenders are getting old), who knows what could happen.
