Brunnstrom to pick team soon
Posted: Wednesday May 07, 2008 05:56AM ET
There could be some light at the end of the Fabian Brunnstrom tunnel. Maple Leafs interim general manager Cliff Fletcher said yesterday the club has been told to expect an answer from the Swedish free agent no later than tomorrow regarding his NHL decision. The Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars are in the running to land the 23-year-old forward.

Isn't it refreshing to read about a player today, who is not going to talk to his own team first as far as who he might play for next season?
How deep are the Stars that this kid could crack the line up? Ditto for Detroit.
I'd speculate the Leafs have the inside track over Montreal and the kid would have the best chance of starting on the ice with the NHL next season. The Leafs are desperate and need to get some things done soon.
Well, one can hope.

Report Offensive CommentI'd like to see him come to Detroit. He'd fit right in with all of the other Swedish All-Stars. I'm sure he'll be watching the Wings/Stars series closely.

Report Offensive CommentI wonder what his priority will be? Best chance to play lots of minutes (Leafs) or best cast of teammates to play with, bettering his chances of producing well (Detroit)? Or maybe it'll all come down to highest bidder, wins. I just hope he lives up to this hype, because he will be a gem is he does. I think he should try to sign with a Detroit or Dallas though: they compare him to Alfredson, who really only came into his own after being joined by Heater & Spezza. Put this guy on a line with Franzen and Zetterberg in Detroit (Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Cleary on the other line) or with Richards and somebody in Dallas, and watch him bloom. Put him on a line with a plug like Tucker and Wellwood (maybe) and he won't be in nearly the kind of position to excel. Maybe its just me though...perhaps he is like Sundin and thrives in a place with no pressure to win....

Report Offensive CommentThis story is getting to be as tedious as the Peter Forsberg come back ...... or his retirement. Who is this guy anyways? Mario Lemieux?
DCruiser | 05/07/08, 10:56 AM
Report Offensive Commentyou might as well consider him a wing, what better way than to join a team that currently has 6 swedes in the line up, besides we just got a new IKEA store

Report Offensive CommentAin't his fault that the team are licking his behind. Of course he wants to get the best deal, why the hell wouldn't he.

Report Offensive CommentBummstrom is a bum. He cant even make his Swedish national team. Even the national team coach doesnt understand why there's all this hype surrounding this guy. I hope he goes to Toronto so Lucic can welcome him to North American hockey.
bostongm | 05/07/08, 01:38 PM
Report Offensive CommentHe went straight back to Sweden after his visit to Montreal. He skipped out on Toronto completely. The radio in T.O. mentioned that Borje Salming spoke with him. I think that they forgot that Salming ended his NHL career in Detroit. Perhaps he's recruiting for the Wings.

Report Offensive Commentwell, if Toronto is out, then I guess I don't have any reason for him to suck...unless he actually signs with the lowly Stars

Report Offensive CommentFirst on another thread, Gocan is pouring out the accolades to Richards. Now he is calling his new Team the lowley Stars...?
The same lowley Stars that are now in the final four.
The same lowley Stars that are about to give something to Detroit they haven't had so far in the Playoffs.
COMPETITION!
Guess the Wings will be starting ASGOODE in net...Looks like the Stars will have their work cut for them in that area. So far they really haven't had to face and real goaltenders.

Report Offensive CommentYes, please do. Pick a team soooon. This kid is giving Forberg a run for his money. How many times is Fannation going to post the same comments about this kid. He better be worth the hype!!!!!

Report Offensive CommentI don't know what this kid is thinking, but if I were him, I'd look at the Wings and think, wow, look at how this organization develops young, players out of Sweden... young players in general, really. I wouldn't just look at Zetterberg, Franzen, Filppula, or Hudler (each representing the different stages of player development), but at the players that were cast off from other teams that became much better players. Dan Cleary's gone from a try-out to a pivotal role player with scoring ability. Mikael Samuelsson is a second-liner, for heaven's sakes. I wouldn't worry about whether or not I am good enough to crack the lineup. I would be looking to get into that organization as quickly as possible.
