Agent: Huet to talk to Caps first

The agent for Cristobal Huet said his client enjoyed his two months in Washington and would consider re-signing with the Capitals before becoming an unrestricted free agent July 1, but he also said substantive talks on an extension have not begun. Acquired from Montreal for a second-round draft pick at the trade deadline, Huet went 11-2 with a 1.63 goals against average and a .936 save percentage during the Capitals' stretch run. The 32-year-old can probably expect to double his $2.875 million salary and, if he reaches the open market, figures to have no shortage of suitors.

You would certainly expect that he would talk to Washington first. The Caps are pretty much going to have to sign him. They don't have too many other options and he played great for them.

Olaf Kolzig is hoping he opts for the free agent market.

May 7, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Why...then the Caps would have to find 2 keepers.

May 7, 2008  09:11 AM ET

you want to talk about a guy being in the right place at the right time. This Washington team is on the rise, there is no doubt in that, but, more important to all of this is the timing of Huet's free agency. He is the top goalie in an otherwise weak market, so EVERY team that needs a goalie is going to try to sign him, meaning his value will be inflated to a level he would not have received otherwise. Good on him to show some desire to stay with the Caps, but at 32, I would say this guy should let the market come to him and laugh all the way to the bank with whoever offers the best package: most money + best chance to win...

Very good reasons above from Gocan...which is why the Caps are a good fit.

I say kudos for a guy wanting to negotiate a fair and decent contract with a team he wants to play for. THATS the kinda guy i want on my team.

May 7, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Leonsis will have to open the bank for him.....and Mike Green who is a restricted FA this year but I think he gets both deals done. He kinda has to if he wants the fans (and Ovechkin) to continue buying into the product.

IDK Baunded, how much money are they willing to pay a backup goalie? The Caps are pretty much invested in Huet for their future, no?

Sure he wants to at least talk to the Caps first because he has class and wants to know what their deal is. But they have two other cheap and formidable backup goalies. I think he hits the open market, because it would make sense for both sides to part. The Senators need a goalie don't they?

May 7, 2008  10:43 AM ET

OtherOne81,
I think the Sens do need a goalie, but who is going to available this off season?
Emery really needs to get the heck out of Ottowa, but who to replace him? It seems like Huet wants to give Washington the best shot to sign him. Maybe Kolzig can go there as a caretaker till someone comes up from the farm? Do they have anyone?

May 7, 2008  10:53 AM ET

If the Caps keep Huet, they'll have to do something about Kolzig because he's not going to be a happy playing second fiddle.

May 7, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Kolzig said all the right things when they made the trade, but he has to be aware that it's almost time. He was good early this season, but he has to realise he's getting on a bit.

I didnt realize Huet was so old, he is only 4 years younger than Kolzig

May 7, 2008  12:07 PM ET

GEO,
I didn't either. But 4 years is a long time in goalie world.

May 7, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Good for him for wanting to stay in Washington. That's a team on the rise, and they're gonna be good next year. Why not stay there? And OtherOne81, no way is he going to Ottawa. Who the hell wants to go to Ottawa? Caps and Sens are two teams going in opposite directions. Detroit or Chicago could be good fits for him if he tests the market. Toronto might be too, but that team's going nowhere either.

May 7, 2008  01:20 PM ET

LOL sorry I thought this thread was about Kolzig my bad

May 7, 2008  01:36 PM ET

Kolzig to Ottawa? Now that I could see.

May 7, 2008  01:39 PM ET

By the way, it finally happened. Toronto fired Paul Maurice. It's about time.

Kolzig has clarified some of his actions to the Washington Post beatwriter. He's not as angry as it was initially made out to be. That said, I have a hard time seeing him return. It'd be nice though.
