APR Report hits WSU hard

The bill came due Tuesday for the attrition in the football regime of Washington State coach Bill Doba, and it was considerable. Deficiencies in the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate statistics means Washington State will be assessed a total loss of eight scholarships in the program, compared to the NCAA limit of 85. "It definitely hurts, but I don't think it's a death sentence," said Doba from Pullman, where he is selling his home after announcing his retirement following the 2007 season. The APR report, released Tuesday by the NCAA, shows 17 Football Bowl Subdivision -- formerly Division I-A -- schools facing sanctions of some kind. But only Idaho (also eight) and Akron (nine) equaled the scholarship hit taken by the Cougars.

I believe this is going to hurt a lot of schools as more student athletes who are more athletes than students leave school for what ever reason. I know U of M is going to have to deal with the bball program as their APR is just at the cuff of what is acceptable and will likely fall below it. Same could happen with football with many early departures. Indiana bball will should get hit hard next year or so as well.

I still say PAY THE PLAYERS! Many don't give a rats ass about the education even though they say, "academics are very important." What they really mean is "how will the school help me pass my classes while I spend most of my time training for <insert sport>.

These schools need to take a page out of Michigan's playbook. General Studies, Independent study courses with grossly inflated grades, etc etc.

As a Wazzu graduate I'm not surprised by this. I was there for the Bledsoe years and we had a terrible graduation rate back then. I just hope Tony Bennett is doing a better job with the basketball program.

And... of course you have EXTENSIVE proof of this, right? Probably the same EXTENSIVE proof that the Ann Arbor News was able to dig up in their 7-month investigation that amounted to all of three athletes with a few too many independent study classes on their transcripts. Wow. Shocking.

It's not our fault your old man won't give it up. Keep hatin' on us. I love it.

Could someone please translate this for me...?

For the record, Florida State is ranked 15th in this APR. Not too bad for a public school in the South, huh? I am certainly not bragging, just pointing out something for those who bash our academic integrity.

Schools like WSU/Idaho get hosed. They can not get the big name athletes so they rely on outcasts, marginal athletes, and athletes that have trouble getting acedemically eligible. They come to school, then fail out, or transfer out to better schools. I went to WSU and love the school, but its in the middle of nowhere. The same goes for Idaho. How does taking scholarships away force these schools to improve? If anything it makes it worse. THe athletes cant pay for the school, and htey cant work. So what do they do? They transfer out, which lowers the APR even more. Also, taking 8 scholarships away will kill any chance to maintain their competitive level, which then more kids will transfer out or drop out. Give me a break. The APR benefits the big name schools and all the smaller D-1 Schools get hosed. Look at the list/rankings. Its all the small schools. Basically your punishing the schools that need help. Its like punishing the dyslexic kid for failing his reading test.

I currently go to wazzu and I agree with everything Jon said. Currently we have multiple players who are in trouble with the law, would be starting, but are currently suspended indefinelty,,,,Bill Doba is a nice guy but he sure ruined our program fast.

The purpose of a university is to advance knowledge in a particular specialty field - not to play a sport. That's the job of sports teams. We don't expect the Patriots to develop a new theory of international relations, do we?

Idaho? Idaho!..Idaeffinho?...you got to be kidding. What have we come to..
