Spygate: What Walsh has, and doesn't
Posted: Thursday May 08, 2008 05:51AM ET
Former Patriots employee Matt Walsh certified in writing that he will turn over eight stolen videotapes to the NFL that show the signals of opposing teams, but the smoking gun that some believed Walsh might provide - a tape of the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough prior to Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002 - is not included. As part of Walsh's certification, he signed off that all videotapes and documents in his possession - from 2000-02 - have been handed over to the NFL, eliminating the possibility he has a tape of the walkthrough. The NFL has not yet seen the tapes, only the certification letter. The tapes will be delivered to the league office today.

These eight stolen videotapes are gonna end up in a fire pit before you know it ,and we'll be left wondering what was on them. The NFL will say there's nothing to see,blah,blah,blah....but do you believe them?

Report Offensive CommentI thought we were done with this and his face would no longer be plastered where I would have to see it. Also mandatory Belicheat and Cheatriots comment.

Report Offensive CommentWhy would you steal video tapes from the team that employed you while your working for them? Are you planning on blackmailing them in the future, or selling them to the highest bidder. I wonder if he got fired originally by the Patriots for stealing these and possibly other stuff.

Report Offensive CommentA lot of "sound and fury" over nothing. And they only cheated the Steelers? No big deal.

Report Offensive CommentCalm down arnold08/Jersey Bob. He didn't blackmail anyone. He didn't sell the tapes after years of having them. And from what I understand, he didn't approach the media, they approached him.
As a videographer myself, I know that tape is acquired and kept for many reasons. He was a videographer. The fact that he had a few tapes from his old job would not be unreasonable to assume.
What do you take home from your place of work?

Report Offensive CommentActually there are several articles floating around from former video men and non football related video professionals that say its standard practice to keep COPIES of what you film. They consider it part of a video portfolio just like a photographers. Sadly, the tapes didn't include a walkthrough and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want NE to go down and see Billy banned for life.
Oh well. Their faux punishment will have to be enough.

They were good questions. You gave a reasonable answer. You have experience that I do not. Also If I take anything from work im subject to a Dishonorable Discharge and confinement in a federal prison. :(

Report Offensive CommentAccording to ESPN there were a number of teams where the Pats taped the coachs' handsignals. Not much more info than that right now but it does make you wonder. You have a great team and now you have a big question mark and a tainted rep. Bad trade-off!!!!!

Report Offensive CommentWalsh had nothing but what the Patriots already admitted to doing. He was fired from the Pats for taping a phone conversation with Pioli. The guy was dirty. I do realize some of you may believe that he was a perfect fit in the Pats organization because of his antics. Bottom line is that the Pats, since 2001, have been great and I forsee them being great for another 2 years or so. So to the haters out there just deal with it, its all you really can do.
biglawdog | 05/08/08, 08:21 AM
Report Offensive CommentFirst, apologies to Jersey Bob. Didn't mean to be personal.
Second, this is kinda' absurd. The guy had a job filming video. He had a couple of tapes of nothing. He didn't say anything before Pats were caught taping Jets. He didn't say anything for months after they were caught. He makes sure he will face no liabilities for turning over the tapes (How stupid is that). Then turns over a hand full of nothing that we didn't figure already existed. The Steelers got screwed, Division rivals got screwed--Go figger'. Now he's this ominous dude who wants to extort the NFL. Good Lord!
How did the press find him? Gee, I dunno', maybe after the scandal broke some reporter thought to check the records for past video guys for the Pats and looked for him because he thought it would be an interesting story. Other than that, wouldn't have a clue how they found him. I'm sure most stories don't just walk into the office.
All those who really think this Golf Pro Dude was going to F with the Pats and the NFL with those tapes and think he could get away with it, raise your hands. He, like the rest of us, know he would wake up with a horse head in his bed.
Now, back to my vacation.

Report Offensive CommentYawn, Four months of a media created circus and nothing more than what the Patriots had already admited too. Maybe what they said about firing walsh for being dishonest was also true? Now he gets his 15 minutes of fame with the comish and goes back to the golf course. Probaly gets to write a book also
Patriot haters will find something else to whine about now I am sure.
and everyone knows the Patriots are the first team to ever break a rule in the history of football
