Dynamo bicycle kick shatters face

Chivas USA defender Lawson Vaughn will require three surgeries, not one as initially believed, to repair a shattered nose and other facial injuries when he was kicked by Houston's Dwayne De Rosario on Saturday night. Vaughn was attempting to head the ball in the penalty area when De Rosario attempted a bicycle kick and smashed the Chivas USA player in the face. He received a yellow card for a reckless foul, but will not be suspensed or fined by MLS.

"Charlie, that really hurt!"

Brave kid, I usually come in to thrash the guy trying to pull a bike. And where does the dangerous kick rule come into play on that?

May 8, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Bicycle kicks, are right up there with flip throw-ins as some of THE most retarded things in football (soccer).

I spent 45 minutes picking up my mates bloody teeth off the ground in a high school game when some nunce did the same thing to one of our players at mid-field no less.

Skilled players do not need these gimmicks.

May 8, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I wouldn't call a bicycle kick a gimmick. It's an amazing atheltic feat when properly executed.

May 8, 2008  10:48 AM ET

The correct call was made. The REF gave him a yellow card for dangerous play. It happens, nobody can complain b/c if he had scored with that bicycle kick you would be seeing it in MLS teasers for the next two years.

That was a dumb, reckless play by De Rosario!
The bicycle kick is a spectacular play but true pros are very judicious as to when to use it. When a defender's face is in the way, is not a good time.
A red card would've been appropiate. This was more than a dangerous play. It was reckless!

May 8, 2008  11:02 AM ET

DCruiser-You'll never see a red card for that and rightfully so. He's not trying to kick someone in the face, just simply do an overhead kick. What's amazing is how people want cards for this but a keeper can come out, punch a player in the face, get nowhere near the ball and there's never a foul. But then if you just stand in front of the keeper and he runs into you, it's a foul. (Btw I'm a forward)

Dangerous foul play results in an indirect free kick (IFK). It is not a yellow card offense. The yellow card was issued for unsportsmanlike conduc (UC)t. If there was intent to injure the player with the ball, a red card is issued for "dangerous foul play". If the intent is to injure a player without the ball, a red card is issued for "violent conduct".

The player doing the bicycle kick is responsible for knowing that no one's head is in the vicinity. If he missed the player (or struck his own teammate) the restart is an IFK. Because of the injury inflicted, however unintentional, the yellow card was issued.

Yeah, you're right, MSFC3221, we'll never see a red card for this type of play, but if some ref decided to **** one under certain circumstances, I wouldn't complain too much about it. I guess is hard to judge "intent" on that kind of play.

May 8, 2008  11:41 AM ET

DAAMMNN!! That sounds painful.

Interesting disagreement about the play (which I haven't seen). It puts a spin on yesterday's posting about quality of refereeing. Even knowledgable folks like the ones on here can see it in different ways, which illustrates just how hard officiating can be and why we're so quick to criticize it.

100% agree, especially with the goalie part ...there have been times where I have conceded the ball to the goalie, stood in my position and then gotten punched or steamrolled and guess who the foul was on? me.

bicycle kicks are gimmickry for some, overused by many but essential to a good forward. you create a legit scoring chance out of what in most cases would be nothing...not using the bike you are giving that scoring chance away.

Didn't deserve a red card. No doubt about that. Was a bit silly, though. He best apologize.

Here's hopin that Vaughn makes a quick, safe recovery.

About the goalie issue, I wish we went back to the days when it was 50/50! When the goalie used to come out with a boot up, I didn't go in, if not, I was putting everything into it, 50/50. Now you can hear the whistle before it blows!

May 9, 2008  08:53 AM ET

There's a lot of discussion about goalies getting away with punches and the punishment not being the same as the bike offense. Anyone remember what happened to Peter Cech of Chelsea? The guy wears a helmet from now on.
Soccer is a contact sport. Professional soccer is 10X that.
You can't fault D-RO for that and I'm sure Vaughn (once he recovers his memory) won't either.
In pro sports 'sometimes' it's almost like sanctioned violence, but this is not the case.

I like the bicycle kick when its pulled at the right moment. I have seen a dynamo player attempt a couple bicycle kicks at stupid moments in the last couple years. It can be beautiful though like Balboa of the US in the 94' World Cup and that ball didnt even score. Just rung the post like no other.
