NFL taking Comcast to federal court

Paul Tagliabue, the former N.F.L. commissioner, said this week in a Federal Communications Commission filing that Comcast removed the NFL Network from a broadly available digital tier as retaliation for the league's not selling eight regular-season games each season to Comcast's Versus channel. The games went to the NFL Network. Tagliabue's one-page declaration is an exhibit in the league's filing, which contends that Comcast, the nation's largest cable operator, is discriminating against the NFL Network. He said that Brian Roberts, Comcast's chief executive, warned him on Jan. 27, 2006, that, having decided not to sell the eight-game package to Versus, "Your relationships with the cable industry are going to get very interesting."

This is going to get interesting, I think. Glad I have DirecTV, though.

To be fair, though, there isn't a whole lot to see on the NFL Network other than the few live games and their live draft coverage. The rest is all filler. I wouldn't pay for it if I didn't get it included in my package.

I am switching soon Trainwreck....cable TV has become a joke. I get 7 Hi D channels. f that

Could I please get the NFL Netowork on Time Warner. I'd pay a little extra, or cancel the HBO for it. Then again, Rich Eisens still on it right? I'm having second thoughts.

Beer-n-drums ,

What's the matter?? You can't afford the bill anymore? go pick up an extra shift at the mills.

Somehow, in the end, the average fan will get screwed. Both these companies care about money in their pocket and that's it.

I dropped comcast and went with directv. Glad I did. Comcast and Time Warner are the 2 worst cable providers ever.

May 8, 2008  11:36 AM ET

They're both a joke - Comcast and the NFL Network. How about just having everything on network television, or not making people pay extra for NFL Network?

May 8, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Comcast is a joke, but the nrying to push it's network onto these companies forcing them to raise already high fees is a bigger joke. I love to see every setback the work gets. Even if it means a victory for a crappy cable company

How about they both stop trying to sc#$@ the working man.

Lets do Corp. Takeover of Comcast:-)
They suck eggs for real fans.

They might as well take Cox Cable with them.... done the same thing..

I watch some things on the NFL network.

I like the combine and their initial evaluation of players.
Draft
8 games
Season retrospectives of my favorite team, Cowboys
productions on players retiring that I liked
interviews of players on my team when I am aware they are going to be interviewed.

Well, in the grand scheme of things, I hope the NFL network doesn't cave like they did last year with the Giants and the Pats.

There's not a ton of stuff, but it's enough to warrant being on my directv 365 days a year. There's much more stuff that I never turn on that I wind up paying for. At least every now and then I have reason to watch the NFL network.

And one quick note, whenever the discussion happens, they talk about how expensive the NFL network is. Yeah, if you pay the full price, but if you sign a contract with them, and it is in the appropriate tier, then you wind up playing about 2/3's the price per subscriber. The NFL network makes up the rest of the money in advertising revenue.

The NFL is a league of bandits. In Canada and Mexico you can get the NFL Ticket for less money and on any cable or satellite system.

May 8, 2008  05:50 PM ET

I hate comcast. I don't get the Flyers home games because I've got direct tv and comcast blocks it on versus.

Cumcast swollows first the bait you with a great price then they jack the price higher than a two bit ****. Then when you are trying to watch CNN Headline News they break in with their 5 min **** news called cumcastnews. The only reson I have cumcast is because we traval and can not put up a dish in apts that we are at. But when we get back home we have a or dish.
