Miller's Sixers future on hold

Ed Stefanski said he has a number of off-season priorities, but deciding the future of 76ers point guard Andre Miller isn't at the top of the list. That doesn't mean the Sixers' president and general manager doesn't value Miller's huge contributions. It's just that because Miller is signed through the 2008-2009 season and can't be a free agent until afterward, Stefanski can focus on other issues. At some point, however, Miller's future will have to be addressed both by him and the team, because the decision will affect many of the other decisions the team is going to make this summer.

If Andre Miller wants to endear himself to the Sixers, he should take the extra step and let them know that he plans to stay in Philly after 2009. That would go a long way toward promoting the commitment of the franchise and the player to each other.
Since the Sixers are on their way climbing back up the ranks of the East, it's not a bad decision to stay. After all, there is something to be said for staying with one ball club for an extended period of time.
The only reason he would want to leave would be to contend for the championship, but all the other contenders already have established point guards. The only place he could go would be Cleveland, to play alongside Lebron James. The Celtics are grooming Rondo, Detroit has Billups, and the franchises in the West already have good point guards as well.

He should hve never been on the team. We missed out on the Oden durant sweepstakes as well as t a top 5 pick this year. I understand learning how to win is important, but look wat boston did when they got a top five pick last year. They had chipps to move and get talent. Sixers just have cap room.

I like him and he obviously showed he can lead a team- that being said.....he is an average point guard in this league. If they can re-sign him to a fair contract....do it. If he wants max-type $ send him on his merry way

JL you forget about the rockets, Denver, Portland, Clippers (if they get Brand back)....there are a lot of teams looking for a real PG...Miller is the best out there

thanks for joining the conversation jackoff--a little too much sun out there in LA.... it's only a matter of time before the rapist strikes again and ends up in jail

Mr_Angelo -

Yes - but these teams are not championship contenders. Portland may become a contender after a couple years, but otherwise, these are all teams that have to compete in the ultra-tight Western Conference.
The point being - Andre Miller may as well stay in Philly and establish some stability and loyalty toward the end of his career.
As I said, the only reason he should leave is if he wants to take a chance with a title contender, all of which already have point guards. (Maybe there's an opening in Cleveland for him, but that's about it.)

Wait a second. Who plays point guard for the Lakers? You gotta think Miller would be an upgrade over Fisher, right? Not that I see L.A. being willing to trade anything for Miller, especially not someone who would fit in with the way the Sixers play.

Sure does, calling me names. The Sixers had a great year, considering how they started.

May 8, 2008  08:03 PM ET

I agree in that I don't know if we should keep Miller, again, how much guess is left in the tank concern. And, if we can upgrade with two or three other contributors, would we not rather have that? The question I would like to pose is this: Is Mo Cheeks the coach we need? Any comments?

make "guess" "gas". lol. Thanks all.

as a sixers fan i hope that elton brand opts out of his last year in his contract with the clippers so then sixers cap space allows the sixers to sign him, he is the answer to the sixers BIG missing piece but dont go paying him a lot of money because his value dropped after his injury.

May 9, 2008  08:26 AM ET

The Sixers should keep Miller for at least two more years beyond his contract. He is a stablizing force for a young group and that cannot be underestimated.

While Elton Brand would be a nice addition, this injury should make the Sixers proceed cautiously. The Sixers really need an Al Horford type player - young, strong with lots of potential.

May 9, 2008  09:11 AM ET

GoOgle....I agree with you....Louis Williams needs another season to watch Miller and how he runs a team....

I don't think there is a "Al Horford-type" player in the draft this year....especially not at #16.....

Take a chance on Elton Brand if he's available....you know what the guy can give you every night...He'll be the 20 pts - 10 rebs a game player he was before....he could be worth the risk....Thad Young is not a power forward...
