Governor: Wrigley name to remain

Chicago Cubs fans who love Wrigley Field's name and historic character will find their passions protected by the state if it swings a deal to buy the North Side ballpark from Tribune Co., former Gov. James Thompson said Wednesday. "We certainly would want the name to stay Wrigley," said Thompson, who is chairman of the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the state/city agency that is in negotiations to purchase the park. Asked whether the authority would sell partial naming rights so that the Wrigley Field name would be linked to another corporate moniker, he said, "I presume there are people out there who think so highly of Wrigley Field that they would want to be associated with it and therefore would be willing to pay for that privilege."

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, here come your Chicago Cubs from Wrigley Field At Pizzaria Uno Place!

I'm still steaming about them changing the name from Weeghman Park......

I like all of these names for that hole of park:
1. ESPN Stadium
2. Blagojevich Earmark Stadium
3. Mexico Park

Actually I like the idea of historic preservation, but this stadium is an uncomfortable hole in the city. The only good thing about Wrigley is the architectural history.

You're right, Touche. Tiger Stadium in Detroit was in that boat also. There were/are many people that think that "old" has to mean "good". Never mind the lousy rest rooms, consessoins, parking and behind-a-pole seating that were corrected with the building of Comerica Park. I had as many good times at Tiger Stadium as anyone, but our memories are often better than the realities.
I imagine much the same could be said for Wrigley Field.
OK Cub fans, let me have it. BTW, please say "hi" to Alan Trammell for me!

For the record, I really like what the money from U.S. Cellular did for stadium. I don't care for the Cell's name but the park has a completely different feel than it did in the 1990's.

The Cell is comfortable, has good sight lines, the food/drink is awesome (yet overpriced... $6 for 12oz beer) and there is lots to do other than watch the game. And the promo's are usually good. And fireworks after Friday night game.

Too bad the Sox aren't playing wll.

Fukudome!

May 8, 2008  11:19 AM ET

How stupid are Chicagoans? Wrigley Field was named to advertise the gum company and to massage the ego of the owner. THEY DON'T OWN THE TEAM ANY MORE!!!

These are the same people who named a new park after Charles Comiskey, one of baseball's all-time worst owners. Who had had no relationship to the team for decades.

Pathetic.

how 'bout Juicy Fruit Field?!

to allstarz: not a bad idea, if it were a dome.

to makeham: Chicagoans ain't like stupid, ya know. we just don't let the facts mess up a good story.

who cares about the cubs anyway, they suck, they suck, they suck, and they suck. i hope they go another 100 years without a worldseries

May 8, 2008  02:39 PM ET

I'll say it agian-people who have nothing better to do than bash and hate other teams must lead pretty pathetic lives. If you don't like the Cubs, then don't read about them and don't watch them. It's that simple (just like you hater out there).
Back to the subject at hand, it's a good thing to leave the ballpark with the 'Wrigley' name. Despite that it was named after a former owner, it's historic to baseball.

Miguel:

I know you are not a Redsox fan, but follow your AL counterparts...and just die now.

May 8, 2008  04:29 PM ET

It's about tradition, not about who owns the team. It should ALWAYS be Wrigley Field. If your team/city doesn't have something as special as Wrigley is to Cubs fans/Chicagoans, then that sucks for YOU, not us. Personally, I'm still angry about lights being put up at Wrigley.

And what's with all the hate towards the Cubs? It's not like they're the friggin' Yankees!

May 8, 2008  04:57 PM ET

no there not the yankees, but they are in 2nd place for that category.

May 8, 2008  05:02 PM ET

What have we done to you? You're a Red Sox fan. What have we done to them to deserve your ire?

May 8, 2008  05:43 PM ET

all these years of bitching about not winning a worldseries, and thinking your something, when have not done anything for baseball, besides sosa and mg home run race. i find it funny as hell that the white soxs won it before the cubs did.

Husker Pride

Such jealousy. I know Nebraska will never have anything other than that semi-pro football team, the Nebraska Corn Holers, to cheer for, but don't let jealousy ruin your life.

Go Cubs!

May 8, 2008  06:50 PM ET

That's because no one can spell Governor Rod Blagojevich's name!

May 8, 2008  07:13 PM ET

Yeah, because God forbid we should actually have faith in this team. What a crime *rolls eyes.*

May 8, 2008  07:57 PM ET

Yeah, there's no parking and yeah it smells like a Frat House on a Sunday morning, but that's its charm. The fact that there is nothing to do in the park BUT watch baseball at Wrigley is a GOOD thing! Corporate sponsorship would ruin that, just like it has ruined every other outstanding ballpark

I'm a White Sox fan, but I still think Wrigley Field is iconic. Renaming it would affect the entire surrounding neighborhood. "C'mon guys! Let's go see the Cubs at Google Park, then grab a beer in Googleville!"

To makeham: Wrigley and Comiskey paid to have those ball parks built, whether it be for their own egotistical gain, or for their love of the greatest American pastime - either way, if it was me paying to build something that grand, you best believe my name would be slapped on the side of it.

I'm glad to be from Chicago, a city that recognizes and embraces its roots. If you don't know where you come from, how can you ever know where you are going?

Happy Centennial Cubbies! Here???s hoping to a World Series in this lifetime, because my God it feels good :-)
