Mariners downplay Griffey trade
Mariners officials downplayed a USA Today story on Tuesday that suggested Ken Griffey Jr. could join the team shortly. Mariners president Chuck Armstrong was quoted in the story saying: "I think everybody in Seattle would like to see him retire in a Mariners uniform. He was born a Mariner and I'd like to see him finish up as a Mariner."... But Armstrong did relay information through the team's media-relations director, Tim Hevly, stating categorically that he was not referring in the interview to any pending acquisition of the onetime Mariners superstar from the Cincinnati Reds.

Furthermore, the team would neither confirm nor deny that tomorrow is Friday.

Junior made mention that he wanted to finish out his career in Seattle, but things remain quiet so far. He has been a great player with no distractions and certainly deserves to be happy in his final years, not to mention his home run numbers and crowd approval...

It's unfortunate that the Reds didn't build a winning team around Jr., injured or not. That's in the past and the Reds can't afford to have him in the lineup after they profit from number 600. Though nobody seems to care that someone legit is going to reach the feat for the first time in nearly 40 years. Sell Griffey so you can afford Dunn. Jay Bruce will fill the empty void with plenty of dough to spare.

Ken Griffey Jr. was "born" a "Mariner"?
The last time I checked, he was born in 1969 in Donora, Pa.

Hombre goes by Stan Musial is also from Donora. Plus a bunch of out-of-work or retired miners and steelworkers? Not sure that town is big enough for those guys, Stan the Man, Griff Sr., AND Brad Wesley...

Say what you want about Junior. As far as anyone knows, he's done it the right way. No juice. No HGH. Just talent and ability. Bonds and Clemens have made a mockery of hallowed baseball records and their egos won't allow them to admit they cheated. I respect Junior and what he has done, Mariner or Red.

Anymore I'm afraid of touting someone's accomplishments in baseball because it seems everyone juiced..I really hope Griffey has done it legit.

He was not named in the Mitchell Report and has not been implicated by anyone else in baseball. That's about all we can go by, but it's better than some of those other boneheads have done.

They don't want to break the bank to bring him back to Seattle.

sounds to me like the Ken Griffey trade rumors are heating up as they do every year. Next Adam Dunn will be on the trade block as well. We have heard these all before.

Grossout9 - You obviously don't know anything about Seattle. First off, Griffey wanted to leave because he always wanted to a Red since he was a little kid and he got death threats from crazy fanatics. We would have paid whatever he wanted and secondly the Mariners over pay, not under pay (Sexson, Beltre). Third we are lossing the Sonics because of the Sonics owner Bennett, who claims he tried to keep the sonics here, but created the most ridiculous and expensive arena plan which would have been built in Renton, which is the slumps of the Greater Seattle area. Also, he knew that the tax payers just spend a lot on the Qwest and Safeco Field, which were not cheap and knew the people in Seattle would not go for it because taxes are so high and Key Arena does not need to be fixed. The fans in Seattle support there teams more than you would ever know, go to a Seahawks game and you'll understand

Griffey for Kenji Johjima and a prospect. Reds could use a catcher, Mariners get a big bat for the outfield. Sounds plausible to me.
