Wizards want to keep Arenas, Jamison

Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld said his summer priorities are to retain Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. Grunfeld put a positive spin on Arenas's statement, via his blog, that he won't return unless the Wizards retain Jamison, who is an unrestricted free agent. Jamison and Arenas have said that they would like to return, and Arenas has repeatedly expressed a desire to see Jamison taken care of first. On March 30, Arenas went so far as to suggest that he'd take less money if it would ensure Jamison's return.

Good move - they will be losers without Jamison and Agent 0. The big 3 are key for the Wizards

This article shows how smart Arenas is, He knows he needs Jamison if they are ever going to get over the hunt and have a shot at the East

May 9, 2008  09:01 AM ET

The Wizards are the Eastern version of Denver.....

They have Solid top level talent, some good role players........
but for some reason (coaching?) they can't put t all together.
This team in the EAST should be a 50 win team-

Why not take this opportunity to try an re-tool the team. This team can't get out of the first round and they its not like they keep losing to the Pistons they keep losing to Lebron James.

I just don't see why they are so eager to keep the status quo when its obviously not doing anything and they have a big contract in Jamison coming off the books.

The Wiz need a better bench, a low post presence and some health. Arenas missed 69 games this year. He says he'll take less to keep Antawn. Let's see if he puts his money where his mouth is ... Jamison's pockets.

May 9, 2008  09:46 AM ET

By all means keep Arenas.

But, please, dear god, get rid of those uniforms!

May 9, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Arena's ball-hogging style is a bring down to any roster. Until he learns to play team ball and stop taking stupid ill-advised shots the Wiz will find themselves where they currently are forever. Average at best

May 9, 2008  10:47 AM ET

The Wiz need to be bigger and tougher up ; plus, they need to play defense. They play better team offense and are more fun to watch without 0; but, he is fun to watch. I'd say that Ernie G. has a dilemma. Does he want them to be entertaining or get past the first round?

One more year and then blow it up. The last time all 3 were healthy, they were in 1st in the East and Eddie Jordan was coaching the All-Star Team. They have talent. Lets see what happens.

May 9, 2008  11:22 AM ET

keeping Agent Zero......my condolences Washington. arenASS is a me first player who does not make others around him better. trade his butt while you can get something in return. call the mavs, bulls, or even NY. he'd fight in nicely in the big apple.

May 9, 2008  11:36 AM ET

I feel as though Grunfeld is stuck between a rock and a hard place, and he knows it. On one hand, if he lets Jamison and Arenas walk, the fan base will be understandably upset -- these are likable, exciting players who sell tickets, and there is no guarantee he could pick up better players over the next couple of years. On the other hand, the Cavs series showed that this team cannot win as it's presently constructed. They have no interior defense and no reliable post-up game (sorry, Brenda Haywood and Antawn "I only rebound in contract years" do not count). Watching the ball getting passed around the perimeter to just end up in a lazy, out-of-rhythm shot attempt or a stalled drive to the hoop was pretty painful to watch...

May 9, 2008  12:06 PM ET

They need somethng different. I like Jamison and Arenas but haven't the last three postseasons' early exits taught or shown them that.

May 9, 2008  12:36 PM ET

JJ730 got it right...Give 'em one more year and see hopefully all 3 all stars will be healthy. If not then yeah switch up...i'd say sign Jamison to a maybe 3 yrs..i know he will probably looking for a 5 years...We're getting Etan Thomas back next year so he should contribute...Brandon haywood had a tremendous year..hopefully he'll just get better. Wizards should do fine next year with all the pieces intact.

May 9, 2008  12:49 PM ET

It makes sense to try to keep the core of this team together. You've got to have something to build on. Without Arenas and Jamison, the Wizards would soon become the Heat.

May 9, 2008  01:03 PM ET

Arenas should extend his contract another year without pay since he didn't play a big role this past season due to injury. I can't understand players grumbling about their contract when they have a good year. You never hear from a player (or agent for that matter) when he has a down year to renegotiate his contract to equate to his bad performance. It should work both ways.

Gilbert, work a trade to which ever team D'Antoni ends up on

We will trade you "Big Baby" and a player to be named later for Jamison.
Sincerely D. Ainge

I've said this before - this team has the right pieces in place, all they need to add is a solid big man and a point guard to replace Antonio Daniels, and give some of the new guys a chance to show they can play. Blatche proved he's capable of going off for double-doubles this year. Daniels is not a leader and does not get it done as a point guard.

Excellent point. This team could be tough if the big three are together.
