Mendenhall lost more than wallet

Posted: Friday May 09, 2008 06:05AM ET

Rashard Mendenhall lost more than his wallet and cell phone in a Chicago stickup early Monday morning. He lost his Rose Bowl watch. He was thankful he still had his life after the 2 a.m. robbery at gunpoint by men wearing ski masks. "It's cool," Mendenhall said in his first public comments since the crime, little more than one day after the Steelers' first-round draft pick ended his first minicamp in Pittsburgh with his new teammates. "It wasn't too bad. I'm safe. I was just hoping he wouldn't pull the trigger. I was just trying to cooperate so he wouldn't." Mendenhall and a female friend were walking along Chicago's lakefront area when the men approached them. He said a little earlier there were other people around but by then things had died down and there were no other witnesses when they were robbed. Although Chicago police said they thought the men, who remain at large, knew they were robbing an athlete, Mendenhall did not believe they knew specifically who he was.

It's Not!

Chi town is a mess. About 30 or so shot in last three weeks. Crooked politics. Isn't a presidential candidate from Chicago? None of them go near there.

Leave Donovan out of this.....lets focus on Jim Kelly or Thurmon Thomas....or even Fran Tarkenton.

Losing the Rose Bowl watch is terrible. But it would have been a lot worse if he'd lost his life.

Report Offensive Comment

He is a lucky man. Alot of crooks would have pulled the trigger

I still say they need to question Mark Cuban since he may need the funds to buy the Cubs.

Smart kid - cooperating and just handing it over is the right thing to do. Losing the watch sucks, but as a first-rounder he is going to be hardly lacking in cash after he signs his contract. Good job, Rashard, you did the right thing.

Where in America these days can you go for a stroll at 2 A.M. without risking being robbed, raped, kidnapped, shot or beaten to a bloody pulp? Certainly not Chicago, L.A., Detroit, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Miami, Tampa...uh, pretty much nowhere.

He is lucky!! Toady they will shoot you in the back of the head for a McDonalds watch and the change in your pocket. I wonder if he's gonna apply for the gun permit now or later??

I am still baffled as to why acting stupid makes the sports page? Let's stick to what's relevant and not if a player lost his Mickey Mouse watch after going to the bars all night.

No mike, but I don't see any candidate in Chicago after 20 or 30 peeps got shot, Is this a detail? Barry Obama was talking about a single mother he met and her terrible suffering, the last time I checked. He ain't touching this.

Have Pacman and Henry have started pulling roberies now?

Report Offensive Comment

Dumb! But .... that's how you learn! You better know your turf before you go for a stroll in any major American city at 2 a.m. sporting expensive jewelry! He???s lucky, as is his female companion! They could???ve easily popped him and had their way with her! Dumb .... and lucky!

The robber probably plays for the Cowboys.
