Carvalho: Ronaldo may wilt
Posted: Friday May 09, 2008 07:23AM ET
Chelsea's Portuguese central defender Ricardo Carvalho believes his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo could find the pressure of the final day of the season too much to handle. Carvalho reckons the Blues' title rivals, Manchester United, are over-reliant on his Portugal teammate Ronaldo - and that they may pay the price for that on Sunday.

I guess we will see.

Report Offensive CommentHe isn't blasting Ronaldo. In fact, I would say he is saying that the rest of ManU rely on him too much, which I would agree with in a lot of respects. They are a different side with him out of the lineup.

Report Offensive CommentIf you go ahead and read the whole article you'll see Carvalho didn't blast him at all. The little synopsis above is misleading, as is often the case.

Report Offensive CommentHes got a pretty cool head. Man U are going up against an inferior oponent , all they have to do is play their game and the title is theres. I dont see the pressure getting to any of them.

Report Offensive CommentI'd feel a lot better if they were at Old Trafford and not at the JJB. I've had the willies about this one for a few days now, feeling like the game has draw written all over it. I don't worry that the pressure will be too much for Ronaldo mentally, but I do agree there might be an over-reliance on his abilitiy to score. A healthy Rooney would certainly add another dimension Sunday, that's for sure

Report Offensive CommentRonnie can't deliver late in the season? Maybe he has a tough time on Big European Nights, but his Class can carry him against Wigan, at any rate, Man U has another star who knows a thing or two about dramatic late season goals in the EPL, Tevez will certainly be up to the task.

Report Offensive CommentIt's not going to matter, Chelsea will draw Bolton and the title will be Uniteds.

Report Offensive CommentAfter really reading Carvalho's comments, he's really not that far off. There have been times that United has relied too much on Ronaldo.
However, I think they will be just fine tomorrow.

Report Offensive CommentHistory on the line here.
The Soccer World's eyes are all on him.
Chrisitano Ronaldo HAS to be feeling the pressure.
But what makes you think he'll fail? The guy is the best player in the world BY FAR right now and he's been on task for the entire season. To say he's going to turn into a goat in the final game of the year takes some cahones, I would say, especially if since it's based off of absolutely no factual evidence whatsoever.
If anybody's going to wilt it will be Carvalho.
But we'll let Ronaldo let his actions speak for him then. I have full faith he'll meet expectations.

Report Offensive CommentRules change proposal: when two teams tie for the league championship, I think they should play one more game. It would be hosted by the team with the better goal difference.

haha you wish buddy! Maybe if your Chelsea had done the job during the season, they wouldn't be relying on another team to do the job for em at the end!

Report Offensive CommentI hope it doesn't happen, but Ronaldo has tended to disappear in big games. Sure he can score two or three vs. Bolton or West Ham, but where is he when they play Arsenal or Liverpool? Or when they play other big teams in Europe? Ronaldo is the odds on favorite to get the FIFA player of the year award, but I think he needs to put on a show in the CL final. Kaka and Messi have shown the ability to play well in big games. While Ronaldo may be the most talented player in the world, until he has a big game IN a big game, he will be criticized.
wd | 05/10/08, 01:48 AM
Report Offensive CommentGranted that Ronaldo is the greatest talent in the world right now, but his personal psychology is that of a whiny 2 year old brat. I suspect that he will react to the pressure by spending a lot of time diving and having embarrassing mini-tantrums on the pitch when he doesn't get the call (or missing the penalty when he does) just as he did against Barcelona.
It's a shame that he isn't mature, what a player he would be!

Report Offensive CommentOh, peez, maybe if your United weren't immune to penalties the story would be different. WE lost how many to the African nations cup, and we're tied on points? Ouch, better hope you HANG ON to that title. Oh, if you were wondering, only one penalty against United all year long, the hand ball on Carrick Vs. my Boys. Very Interseting indeed. NO worries though, you can have the title, we'll take Europe.
