Els: Blow up Sawgrass 17th

Ernie Els wasn't the only one upset with the 17th hole. He was just the most vocal. "Seriously,'' he said, "I think they should blow it up.'' And, yes, he meant it. The roller-coaster ride known as 17 was a terror Thursday afternoon. With the wind up and the sun baking the green, you could hardly find pitch marks out there. Skid marks? Oh yeah. Els put one in the water, then proceeded to hang his next shot close to the ties. He exited with a triple bogey 6 and went from 2-under to 1-over. "Anybody will be wanting to blow 17 up after making 6,'' Els said. "Yeah, it was tough. I played so good all day. You know, I really worked hard on my game, and I just felt like I hit a lot of good shots."

Everey year there is a major b&*^% about this hole. If it was maybe the second or third hole it probably wouldnt be to bad but using a gimmicky hole at the 17th is just plain stupid.

Report Offensive CommentI don't think the 17th hole is "gimmicky". If anything it's the signature hole of the golf course. And coming so late in the round makes it even more exciting. These guys are professionals hitting short irons. It's not rocket science. But I do believe it's fair to all participants.

I agree. @ 135 yards and 3912 square feet fo surface area to hit onto, I don't think that a touring pro should complain about it.
