Why Mavs will hire Carlisle
Posted: Friday May 09, 2008 07:56AM ET
For anybody who thinks Rick Carlisle was a name out of the blue to become the Mavericks' new coach, a history lesson is needed. President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson has known Carlisle for about 20 years, and they have a connection that goes back further. Both attended Worcester Academy, a prep school in Massachusetts. They were not at the school together; Carlisle preceded Nelson by a couple years. But both played basketball there, then went on to diverse careers in the game. The Mavericks, Carlisle and his agent were working out details of the agreement Thursday night, and an expected news conference today may be pushed back to allow for the deal to be completed. There are no serious snags, apparently, meaning Carlisle is on schedule to become the new coach. It's a matter of attorneys clarifying details of the deal.

Avery was a great coach but this is a solid hire.

Report Offensive CommentIt makes sense to be surrounded with people you feel comfortable with, but at the end of the day, the Mavericks are a basketball team, and none of this is going to create wins. Dallas appears to be getting older, but not smarter. Until they can make a move for a center, they will continue to be a 1st round knockout.

Report Offensive CommentI agree about needing a center .. in a BIG way!
Hopefully this hiring will prove more productive than Donnie's last big move for Kidd.

Can't find them.... Need help? How about Oberto?

Report Offensive CommentRick Carlisle is nothing more than an x and o's assistant coach. Period. That's why they fired him from arguably the best "eastern" (at the time) teams.

Report Offensive Commentdrj0514, great coach to solid hire is a step backwards.
Everyone look at pencilneckgeek giving Oberto some credit!

Report Offensive CommentThought that might bring you out jpd. Spurs will meet the same fate as the mavs did, and they are just as old.
I'm almost ready to say that the Hornets will challenge the Celts in the finals. Almost.

Report Offensive CommentSmart choice. The Mav's may not need the complete re-build overhaul after all.

I walked right into that one. Hey you'll like this. How many media guys are now saying the Spurs will win this one after pronouncing them DOA? I love it (when it benefits my team). If all it takes to be a sportswriter now is to waffle back and forth depending on who won the last game, then there is a job waiting for every Laker fan! I just hope you team is ready for the "rope a dope" Spurs!

Report Offensive CommentIt's a done deal, just gotta make sure the dollar signs ($$$) add up on the contract. So announce the hiring and let's get back to the real story: how are the Mavs gonna beat the Spurs? A good coach is a start but they will need a younger point guard no matter what.
ToM | 05/09/08, 11:01 AM
Report Offensive Commenthire any coach you want but with a 7' shooting foward with no heart, it will not matter. throw in a point guard who is in his twlight, and not even an average presence in the middle you get 1st round dissapointments. hell Mc Grady would feel right at home here.

Report Offensive CommentRope a dope? Thought all media types were putting the Hornets as underdogs. Where is Texasmade anyway? But they will waffle, have no fear.
I thought the Spurs would be able to defense the Hornets better. Missed second half last night, but the first half looked like it was to be a good game.

They were wearing the Hornets down in the first two games by letting them score so much. Rope a Dope. (Hey it's what allowed me to sleep that past few nights!). The Spurs have found something here on the defense. I don't think Paul like Nash or Kobe can do it all alone. Shut down the other guys and they can be beaten. The second half was good, more of the same. This should be a great series now. It will be interesting to see how Scott and the Hornets react.

Report Offensive Commentjbd- I agree but the change from Avery to him will not affect the team. They need a true center and a point guard who has a future.
drj0514 | 05/09/08, 01:54 PM
Report Offensive CommentOh it'll affect the team alright! Just not the way mav's fans want...
Why does everyone keep this idiotic conversation going about a true center? They are not in the league or they aren't mature (basketball wise) enough to make a difference. Damp has been in for 10 plus yrs, and still can't shoot. I don't see Hakeem out there.
