Olie Kolzig, the Washington Capitals goaltender through some of the best and worst moments in the team's history, confirmed yesterday what had been suspected for weeks: He has played his final game for the franchise that drafted him in 1989 but would like to return for a 17th NHL season.

Tell us something we didn't know.

May 9, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Careful what you wish for Olie. Maybe Huet falters and the Caps need you.Good luck as a free agent.Always a class act.

Peter...that avatarl looks like a mini Pope with a hockey stick.

It's been a great ride for him, I guess no more great battles between the Pens and the Caps like yester years. Hope for the best!

It is baun..

the pop-ette?

May 9, 2008  09:39 AM ET

here's to Ollie The Goalie!
I hope he goes somewhere and does really well. He's been the face of that franchise and deserves one more good year with a good team

May 9, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Bummer. Hope he mends fences with Leonsis and McPhee. A jersey retirement night would be a lot of fun.

May 9, 2008  09:48 AM ET

That'd be a shame ...... but understandable!

Kolzig should be a professional and gracefully leave, not put like a baby. All players are eventually replaced, and Huet came in and earned the job outright. There is no reason for hard feelings against anyone, just a fact of the game.

Kolzig would be a great signing for the Habs, who need a veteran to stabilize Price. I would use Halak, a good goalie in his own right and still very young, as trade bait to acquire some depth at forward positions. Kolzig could play 15-20 games next year for the Habs and serve as player/coach/mentor for Price.

"Put" should have been "pout" , sorry for the horrid grammar...

May 9, 2008  10:00 AM ET

I sure dont see him pouting from that article. Class guy all the way.

May 9, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Joec,
You're right, to a point. Yeah, this is the nature of "the business", but sometimes an organisation should, or could show a bit of loyalty. I remember the Giants waited till the last day to release a player seperately from all the rest.
I also agree about Kolzig in Montreal. I think he would be a great influence on Price.

May 9, 2008  10:13 AM ET

The Senators would be smart to try and sign this guy. He's still good and ten times more reliable than what they have now.

May 9, 2008  10:17 AM ET

"Kolzig should be a professional and gracefully leave, not put like a baby."

How has be been a baby? By saying he's not going to return to the team?

I know Price is young, but IDK if Montreal needs a backup multi-million dollar backup. If they do, good for them!

Kolzig refued to speak to the media the entire time Huet started in Washington, even during their playoff drive and first round series... then after they were eliminated he rushed out of the room, bypassing the media and giving the impression to all that he was angry..

He should have been a stand-up guy and said all the right things for his teammates, even Huet. When Kolzig was a young goalie, he took a job from another player. It is the nature of the business. He should have backed Huet and showed his leadership abilities instead of acting like a 12 year-old. Everyone knows his career is at the very end... he should have realized this and enjoyed the ride into the playoffs. Then, he was free to sign anywhere.

Kolzig isn't going to get a big paycheque from anyone. He would be lucky to get 1.5 from anyone needing a 39 year-old whose best days are way behind him.

May 9, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Prett sure Olie's saying he doesnt want to be a back up.

May 9, 2008  10:51 AM ET

"I haven't completely made up my mind," Kolzig said. "For me, it's all about my family. The situation has to be good for my family. I still feel that I can be a dominant goalie in this league. If the offer is not out there . . . I'll just sit by the pool with a six-pack." <-----not thats foo kin classic.

ic joec. didn't take it in stride. i still have sympathy for the guy, because he's been a big piece of their organization for years and was a part of the reason why they got into the playoffs.
