Calderon wants starting PG job

Jose Calderon said on his personal website that he wants to be a starting NBA point guard, which is the same position coveted by T.J. Ford. Calderon's posting was his first public declaration that he wants the No.1 job. "I want to be a starter and be in a team that aspires to everything," he wrote. "I will not be on a team in which I cannot be an important contributor." However, Calderon really doesn't have much to say about where he plays next season. Because he is a restricted free agent when his contract expires July 1, the Raptors can match any offer he gets from another team, a move GM Bryan Colangelo has repeatedly said he will make.

hey man,
don't put it on your personal website. what were you thinking? just go talk to your coach. honestly, if he thinks you deserve it, you will get it. you have to earn it in this league.

You want money Jose don't lie bro.

May 9, 2008  09:44 AM ET

good luck taking that spot from TJ Ford
I'd love to have Ford on my team, the underachieving Mavs, with a washed up point gaurd

Calderon,

Portland's Kevin Pritchard will be calling you soon. Come over so you can play with your Spanish teammates Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez...the new 3 Amigos.

Owner Paul Allen will offer you so much $$ that Toronto won't be able to match, so you will be a free man soon.

Odenator,

Did you even read the article? Again: "he is a restricted free agent when his contract expires July 1, the Raptors can match any offer he gets from another team, a move GM Bryan Colangelo has repeatedly said he will make."

Colangelo said he wants to keep Calderon and Colangelo knows what he's doing.

Calderon clearly ran the offense better than Ford this year and has a vested interest in staying in a Foreign Friendly Market. Possibly because after 3 years of healthy determined play he has chemistry between the starting line up and the bench and most importantly the Fans. Ford has not gelled across the team or market the same way - this is due to his injury prone body and a bit of a chip on his shoulder regarding his starting position.

The smart move is to pay Jose what he needs, keep the sure thing and deal Ford for a big wide body - Just not Shaq.

Delfino can cover the 2nd PG spot for now.

May 9, 2008  10:16 AM ET

They will shop around TJ Ford over the Summer. He is healthy now, and has some trade value... This will enable Jose Calderon to take over as the new starting PG for the Raptors.

It will be a busy off season for Bryan Colangelo, as he was quite unhappy with the overall performance of the team. Watch for him to trade 3-4 more players.

May 9, 2008  10:17 AM ET

calderon could become one or the premier point guards in the league if given enough minutes as he proved when tj ford was hurt last season. just take a look at the man's assist to t/o ratio, its insane, and it also helps that he is a high percentage shooter, and free throw shooter...he will be a great player is this league

May 9, 2008  10:18 AM ET

two players demanding the same starting position, thats never good.

May 9, 2008  10:24 AM ET

Calderon stays, TJ goes. Trade TJ to whoever is offering a legit centre who can defend the low post, the Raps need that desperately! I would even take a draft choice if it means the raps can get a legit shot at Roy Hibbert in the draft.

May 9, 2008  10:57 AM ET

sorry to disapoint those wanting to see calderon playing elsewhere, it is not happening any time soon. calderon will be wearing a raptor uniform for a while and will definitely be wearing one next year. ford will be dealt in the offseason and calderon will get the #1 spot. calderon knows this as well, trust me.

May 9, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Thank goodness Jose Calderon has stood up for himself. This season reports had it come across as Calderon playing the big brother to TJ Ford's whiney spoiled brat routine.

Calderon good enough to start and has worked hard enough to expect to get that opportunity. By clarifying the situation now, this team at least knows where things stand.

Respect the TJ.

May 9, 2008  12:43 PM ET

that means TJ is gone.

May 9, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Sorry Odenator. No sale. Calderon has actually earned the right to be the starter. he should have been an All-Star this year. Toronto would be crazy let let him go.

May 9, 2008  12:44 PM ET

Odenator

On the other hand, you can make a play for Ford.

May 9, 2008  12:48 PM ET

if toronto trades tj, 30-40% of fans would be dissappointed, 50% would be happy.
if toronto doesn't keep jose, 80% would be dissapointed, 20% would be retarded.

Calderon ain't going no where. I know Miami is in love with the guy but unless they offer up that sweet sweet draft pick or Shawn Marion Jose will be dino in Toronto for a long time. Expect Colangelo sign-up soon. What the Raps need is a legit centre! Roy Hibbert would look great in a Toronto uniform.
