Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen is likely to miss the remainder of the playoffs after he was found to have a blood clot in his left ankle yesterday. It is devastating news for the Flyers as they open their series with the Penguins tonight. "I got hit with a shot [from Andrei Markov] in Game 4 against Montreal," the 33-year-old defenseman said. "It's been getting sorer and sorer every day. We thought we'd get it checked out because it did not get better and they found a blood clot. . . . This has been an awful day for me."

i love that fate is always on a philly team's side

May 9, 2008  07:07 AM ET

Whats this?
Nonsense...the guy is a Flyer for goodness sakes.
The ankle is a long way from the heart. Cut the darn thing off and get out there and stop making European excuses.

Time to see what Ryan Parent is all about. He's been highly touted as a shut down defenseman in juniors. Modry will look like a pylon out there so I don't see any other option.

GO FLYERS!

Why doesn't John Stevens put Kapanen on the defense, he's both fast & smart, then bring up Cote or Downie to be on the 4th line .. i mean, im always down to watch a Cote-Laraque fight ... I think the Flyers can hold it together, all you can do is have faith!

May 9, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Flyers having been facing adversity all year and has overcome. Here's just another opportunity to do just that. Go Flyers!!!

phillyfool27....sorry to disappoint you but this Pens' fan will NEVER wish something like this on anyone. Prayers are out that the blood clot stays put and doesn't move elsewhere. Quick recovery, Kimmo.

That sucks, I feel like they need to make skates that are more protective.

May 9, 2008  08:42 AM ET

This sucks. I like UlteyMVP idea though. I think that Sami would actually be a good D Man.

At some point I am certain that we'll be treated to Cote-Laraque rumble, although I don;t like anyones chance against Laraque.

May 9, 2008  08:47 AM ET

I haven't seen a fight in the playoffs yet. I doubt that's going to change.

May 9, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Sami played defense the last time the Flyers made this deep a run.....You know he can move....you know he's smart with the puck....Your-a-Slob Modry is NOT an option for this series....It's like watching cement dry when he skates....Parent, who will be a VERY good Defenseman in a year or so, isn't ready for the responsibility of a Crosby or Malkin....yet....Kapanen is the only option they have left....Let Downie get in there and play the Sean Avery part and stir the pot a little....

Laraque and Cote will not fight in this series (unless one game gets out of hand - scorewise)....No coach will allow his "goon" to put his team down for 5+ minutes on a power play....especially against either one of these power play units....

baun-ded,
European excuse? I hope this was sarcastic, though you never know around these parts..
Get better Timo...(says the Rangers fan)

Feel bad for Timonen, he was a beast against the Caps. Should be a great series regardless.

Best thing to come out of Philly is the cheese steak. When the Pens get 2 up on the Flyers they will fold. Pens in 5 with one gimme game back to them to help pay for the TV Contract.

Detroit - PENS will be sweet.

May 9, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Detroit looks preety scary...again!

May 9, 2008  09:54 AM ET

The Flyers will have to adjust, won't they? Every team faces adversity during the playoffs. The Stanley Cup is a gruelling endurance marathon as much as anything else. Those who survive with enough good players standing, take the spoils.

For Jason Smith's sake, I hope the Flyers win the Cup.

For Jeoffrey Lupul's sake, I hope they loose (can't stomach the punk).

uhoh. Cote is a puss ^^

May 9, 2008  10:12 AM ET

I agree Baunded. European pond hockey excuses.

They don't get blood clots in North America?
