Bulls not rushing to sign D'Antoni

Unfazed by media reports that the Knicks were preparing a large offer to Mark D'Antoni, Bulls GM John Paxson has made it clear to the Suns coach's camp that he still plans to interview other candidates. Paxson interviewed D'Antoni over parts of Sunday and Monday in Phoenix. Those familiar with Paxson's reaction said he liked the gregarious D'Antoni personally and is intrigued by certain ideas on using Bulls personnel. But the same issues that plagued D'Antoni's basketball relationship with Suns GM Steve Kerr -- lack of attention to defense, practice habits -- are giving Paxson pause beyond possible financial concerns. He will likely seek at least the $8.5 million the Suns still owe him over two years.

Man, your post doesn't make sense

May 9, 2008  08:54 AM ET

so when did he change his name to...Mark?

May 9, 2008  08:54 AM ET

I loved my 4th grade teacher because she never gave us homework. NBA players love Mike D'Antoni because he doesn't make them practice hard.

I'm not sure if that is something that you should be proud of especially when you are trying to sell yourself as coach for a young NBA team.

" NBA players love Mike D'Antoni because he doesn't make them practice hard "

That is utter nonsense......
- this is you reading stories on web blogs & espn & believing its the gospel.

I'm not saying he's the greatest coach EVER.......but If he is such a bad coach, his teams don't practice, how does he win so many games?

May 9, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Did it take them 3 minutes to write this. Who is Mark? And mroe stupid pics.. anywho..

Mike just wants his pay and would probably do well with Bulls or Knicks. He is not trying to get more money from the Suns, they don't want him. He is gone. Welcome coach Kerr.

I think he wins games because he has a veteran team that doesn't need to practice much. Which is fine. My point is I don't think thats really a great selling point when your applying for a job to coach a young team and I think Paxson migh agree with me.

I might be wrong but I recall Grant Hill joining them and a big reason for that was he wanted a light practice slate.

May 9, 2008  09:18 AM ET

And I didn't say he doesn't ever make his teams practice I just don't think he made them practice long or very hard. He'd rather have his players rest. At least thats what I've read and I don't think I'm the only person who has heard that before.

The past two years they didn't trade any of these guys to get the big names when they had the opportunity, (Gasol, Garnett, Kobe). So if the Bulls value their young players so much they should bring a coach in to bring these guys together to play to their potential and win. Big mistake for the Bulls if they don't go hard at D'Antoni. Who is out there that is better?

May 9, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Hey Texasmade get up, you have work to do here!

May 9, 2008  10:51 AM ET

The Bulls have realized not to fall for the "I must have an contract by Friday" deadline that D'Antoni is trying to pull.

Kerr gave him until today to make a decision and he believes Kerr will fire him. He doesn't want to be fired. And if Kerr doesn't fire him, D'Antoni can't stand the fact Kerr will be there standing over his shoulder. So D'Antoni's out there pounding the pavement and telling everyone the "you have to hire me now before someone else snatches me up" song and dance.

But Kerr won't fire him because the Sun's owner will have to pay D'Antoni a lot of money ($8.5mil) if they do. And the owner is a banker who just spent his bundle getting Shaq and will now retreat into the fiscally conservative mode. BTW; Kerr doesn't want to coach the team; that would take too much time and energy. He likes the laid back role of boss for now.

D'Antoni is too "proud" to stay and take the money while working under a new boss he doesn't like. Kerr has taken one of his titles and has a throttle on D'Antoni's authority and he doesn't like ti. D'Antoni actually got a demotion this year when Kerr came in! D'Antoni wants to leave but will not walk away from that kind of money unless he has a new job on the table.

End result is that D'Antoni will come back to the Suns as a lame duck coach, will be unhappy, and will get fired after next year's season. His flame won't be as bright because the Suns won't do as good, so he'll become a TV commentator for a year. But you can't blame the guy for trying to strike while the iron is hot. It just looks like he would do better at getting a new job if he was fired, unlike the way us common folks have to do it!

1. Sports reporters have been saying the Suns will fire D'Antoni for a while now. I didn't start this storyline, the differences between Kerr and D'Antoni and the first round loss to the Spurs started it.
2. D'Antoni is under a current two year contract with the Suns totalling $8.5 million. He's been given permission to talk to the Knicks and the Bulls this week. but is still under contract to the Suns.
3. If you didn't like your job because your boss didn't have confidence in you, and didn't publicly support you, would you leave? Maybe.
4. If you didn't like your job because your boss didn't have confidence in you, and didn't publicly support you, but you were making 4+ million dollars a year, would you leave? NO!

Part 2-the Bulls side:
1. If you were interviewing someone for a job and he was a good fit for the job, would you hire him? You bet.
2. If you were interviewing someone for a job, he was a good fit for the job, but he gave you a five day deadline to hire him, would you hire him? Depends.

3. If you were interviewing someone for a job, he was a good fit for the job, but he gave you a five day deadline to hire him, would you hire him if you knew someone just as good (like Avery) was available? Depends.

May 9, 2008  01:19 PM ET

The Suns did the right thing of not firing D'A. If they did then D'A would get an easy 8.5 mil. Now if he was hired by another club then the Suns don't have to pay him. Unlike Avery Johnson, he was fired and he got the easy $14 million.

D'A was good because of Steve Nash. Steve Nash made his teammates look good and at the same made D'A look good. This will be proven on his next stint and it was already proven before the Suns got Nash. What is the record w/ Nash and w/out Nash?

Excellent post ToM.

Guam Baller - I fear you are right about Nash making D'Antoni look better than he is, that's the only thing I'm interested in seeing when he ends up coaching somewhere else. Of course it will depends on the GM, owner, market, roster and overall team philosophy, but it could be interesting.

Buyouts for players or coaches don't make sense. You are being payed to perform a service for a team. If you don't wish to perform the service, quit and forfeit your salary. Cassell, Mourning, Howard. The list goes on forever.

Imagine one of us going to our boss and saying pay me my salary so I can work fro a competitor. LMAO

Am I getting 8.5 mil?

May 9, 2008  03:15 PM ET
