Ellis defends Cowboys' Williams

Greg Ellis is tired of the criticism directed at Cowboys teammate Roy Williams. Ellis, the veteran outside linebacker, said he's heard the perception of fans and media that Williams, a strong safety, is a liability in pass coverage and the team should cut or trade him. "I want Roy on this team," Ellis said. "I know he wants to be on this team." Last week, Williams said he is still not comfortable in the 3-4 defensive scheme employed by coach Wade Phillips. Williams confided in Ellis before last season that he was worried about finding a comfort level. Williams also said sometimes he hopes passes won't be thrown his way in one-on-one coverage.

Williams should be worried regardless of what a teammate says in his defense. He'd better learn how NFL football is played and step up to that level. Earn your money for a change Roy.

Report Offensive CommentRoy Williams needs to go play OLB in a Tampa 2 Scheme. The guy takes BAD angles and he can't cover.
Why on Earth would you tell the Press that you still get nervous when your one on one and the QB throws your way? Are you stupid Roy? Now they will pick on you more than ever.
Henry needs to switch to FS and Hamlin to SS. In todays nfl you need two FS's instead of an in the box safety. Watch the High lights of any Giants game and you will see Roy screw up in Coverage and just normal angles. Greg Ellis should be talking, him and Roy Williams will be gone no later than next season.

Report Offensive CommentWhat does this story REALLY mean? Has the rest of the NFL figured out Williams is garbage, and he figure his best chance is to stay in Dallas.....Hmmmmm?
...And he's worried about finding a 'comfort level'.....WTF?! I'ts Football, not a pillow fight!!!!!!!

Report Offensive CommentAL, I feel Roy Williams issues are more attributed to confidence these days than lack of ability. I can remember his first couple years when we could count on him for interceptions and bone-crushing hits which all led to offenses making sure where he was on the field before passing! Where that tenacity went I don't know! I do know he will be a Cowboy this year which means they will either find a way to "cover" his deficiencies and/or change a few things about the defensive scheme based on the amount of money invested in him. I do miss the Roy Williams we drafted, but I will not get on that "hate" bandwagon with you, because he has done some good things for us over the years!

Report Offensive CommentBecause Darren Woodson made sure he looked good by knowing his assignments. I could send you all the highlights from last season and show you about 3 screw ups a game by Roy Williams that almost all led to touchdowns.

Report Offensive CommentWilliams has had plenty of time. He's a pro bowl veteran. By his own admission, as stated above, he should not be the starting safety for Dallas. Maybe a nickel guy. I, as a Dallas fan since birth, am tired of seeing big bad a** Roy Williams get smoked by receivers. Surely there is a better option at this position??

Report Offensive CommentIf he didn't suck so bad then he wouldn't get so much criticism. He can't cover even slow receivers. He's not an NFL quality safety. Just because he hits people hard, he has this great reputation. Cut this jackass before he costs you another big game

Is it that he doesn't like Wade Phillips' variation of the 3-4? He's been playing in a 3-4 since he's been drafted.

I cannot argue last season's performance by Roy Williams with you, it was what it was..............terrible! However you sound like a fan who never sang his praises at one time and I would have to question that of you! Darren Woodson contributed to his success with his knowledge and ability, but no way he should receive ALL the credit for Roy's early years of success! He didn't make those pro bowls just because he was popular or dated Kelly Rowland! So though we are usually on the same page AL, I will respectfully agree to disagree with you here.
