Drivers unsure of new Darlington

NASCAR returns to its roots Saturday night with the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The tight, egg-shaped oval, which held its first race 58 years ago, is legendary in NASCAR and known as "the Lady in Black" because drivers routinely scrape its walls -- or worse -- as they maneuver around the 1.4-mile circuit. The track will have an added quirk because it was repaved after last year's race. Drivers aren't sure how that will affect this year's event, although testing on the new surface indicated speeds will go up.

It will be the same old Darlington, just with a new surface. You'll still see guys scraping the wall in the turns. The lap times won't decrease the 2 to 3 seconds like in years past. Recent tire tests showed only a few tenths of a second drop over long runs.

Notice there isnt sponsor stickers covering every square inch. No Rotor Router on the roll bars I bet too.

They'll be getting new tires every ten laps, and still complaining.

As a south Carolina resident i hope it is only a taste of things to come with the new pavement..6 years ago track was in danger of being kicked to the curb along with rockingham and wilkesboro. now they have added new seats and new pavement and now they are planning on making a $11m dollar renovation of the garage area..and while half the tracks that have 2 dates rarely sell out ..it would be nice to see Darlington get its second race back
