Nonis on Maple Leafs talks

Speculation is percolating that Dave Nonis will be in Toronto early next week, possibly on Monday, for an interview with the Leafs regarding the vacant general manager's job. During a radio interview yesterday, Nonis was asked about the stories that have linked him to the Leafs. Toronto asked the Canucks for permission to speak to Nonis, who was fired as GM of the Canucks a few weeks ago. But Nonis said the Leafs did not have to have permission to talk to him, and that the request was done out of courtesy.

This is now old news as the Leafs Do have permission to talk to him.Try n keep up T/R. Okay?

Exactly Peter..and like I asked yesterday...why did the Leafs need permission. Sounds to me from Dave's comment that he is very interested to speak with the Leafs.
I still believe that there will be no change in the Leafs GM position until after the Playoffs are finished and the dust has settle though. Nonis is a decent candidate. I wonder what ever happened to the old tradition of sending your resume out to potential employers? Oh yeah...I forgot, the Leafs are trying to break from past traditions.

They need permission because hes still under contract. If the leafs sign him the Nucks will be out from under his contract and maybe get a cheesy draft pick thrown in.

Nonis says they didn't need permission there Mini P.

"But Nonis said the Leafs did not have to have permission to talk to him, and that the request was done out of courtesy" Not sure where you saw what your saying Baun. If an exec is under contract (as Nonis is) you MUST have permission to even talk to his gramma. But as of thi9s morning that permission has been granted. Just as the Sharks have DENIED permission for them to speak to Ron Wilson and the Wings have turned them down on talking to Holland and Jim Nill.

it'll be Nonis or fletcher keeping the seat warm next year for Burke, once his contract runs out in Anaheim.

May 9, 2008  09:57 AM ET

If Noonis is dumb enough to walk into that viper's nest, he deserves it.

May 9, 2008  11:45 AM ET

can't argue that Holmgren deserves Executive of the Year, that's for sure. I can't think of a single guy more deserving this season, though I guess George McPhee made some pretty good moves in Washington, but nothing like the turnaround in Philly.

Nonis will likely take the Gm job in Toronto if they offer it, we all knew after his firing that he wouldn't be unemployed for long...

May 9, 2008  03:14 PM ET

Typica Leafs. Going after a GM who could only manage to get his team into the playoffs once in three years. Nonis may have been a good assistant GM under Burke, but by hiring Nonis now and waiting for Burke to join the organization in a year is foolish! There is no guarantee that Burke will want the job... but hey, we are talking about the Leafs organization. Making lazy, idiotic and stupi@d moves is their policy! If I were a Leaf fan I would stick my head into the oven now, to save myself from the torture that this organization puts all of their fans through.

.......Hey, why dont they bring back Gilmour. If he sucks as GM they could always reprise those milk adds. Now there's a guy who knows how to sell his milk!

Bostongm...The Leafs are doing exactly what they should be doing. Tossing out the old management and searching for a new leader and giving him autonamy. You have to build from the top down...there really is no rush as long as things are in place by September. Fletcher will keep the ball rolling but expect things to speed up once the playoffs are done.
Gms and coaches and scouts will all be seeking work. Players free agents and GMs will be looking for deals and trades.
I'm not convinced Burke is the right guy for them though.
To be realistic...we really have to wait and see what deals can be made for free agents and through trades before they start looking at buyouts etc for the players. Plus a GM needs to be in place and hire a coach. Its not a quick fix...but I really think under the new cap rules and pressure from the City and sponsers they have to walk their talk this time around. They NHL needs the Leafs to be competitive and as much as folks like bashing them...that is a true fact.

Nonis

May 9, 2008  05:43 PM ET

he would be a good hire for them and not have the dollar restraints he had in Vancouver. As far as the guys bashing...consider the source...Heck, that Pops guy with the generic avatar bashing on Dougie isn't even worth a remark.

May 9, 2008  07:27 PM ET

I wouldn't mind seeing Bobby Orr and Mark Messier in the Leafs employ in some capacity either. Not in a GM roll but with potential to get there. Might be cool to see Mess behind the bench though...Pretty sure he could get the most out of everybody and knows the game well and has the respect and star quality thats needed in Toronto. Its just a thought though.

No rush as long as things are in place by September, what about the draft, free agency and trades over the summer?

People want Burke there because they know he won't cave to the pressure and media as easily as most, he's got the personality, plus the media wants him because they know he'll tell them to f????k off and give them a story to write every slow news day.

Holmgren did well because he had the power and was willing to take the punch to the gut last season to strengthen their position for this year and the future. Leafs don't have the pieces ready do turn around that fast obviously, but that's the type of mentality they need.
