WVU deposes Rodriguez's agent

As the legal wrangling in the contentious lawsuit between Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez and his former employer West Virginia University continued, yesterday the field of play shifted to a Toledo-area hotel. There, the legal team for the Mountaineers questioned Mike Brown, the agent who represents Rodriguez, in a deposition that started at 9 a.m. and didn't end until 7:30 p.m. Brown said last night he preferred not to comment on the issues covered in the deposition until after his legal counsel had an opportunity to review the transcript. Rodriguez resigned from his West Virginia post in December. West Virginia sued Rodriguez later that month, demanding payment of a disputed $4 million buyout clause in his contract. Over the past five months, a bitter feud has played out between the two parties.Throughout the ordeal, Rodriguez has contended he signed the West Virginia contract under false pretenses and that certain verbal commitments made by West Virginia administrators at the time he entered into the agreement were not met, including a promised reduction or removal of the buyout clause. West Virginia officials have denied those claims.

Whats this all about? Some kind of buyout clause? How did this not surface in the news earlier...?

May 10, 2008  09:56 AM ET

This is the most tired story in NCAA Football. Enough of it.

May 10, 2008  10:41 AM ET

In fairness, Rodriguez should fork over the money. Michigan alums should pass the hat and get it done - AND GET THIS STUPID THING OVER WITH! (WVU *is* acting a bit like a jilted lover and it's embarrassing. He's gone and he ain't never comin' back. Get over it.)

May 10, 2008  11:12 AM ET

This is nothing but a worn out soap opera. This could drag on well into the "08" season. RR pay the damn money so you can focus on what needs to be done. The "08" season is going to be hard enough and this mess will not help period. Michigan's AD shares half the blame in this. My Question is this: Why did they go after RR when he signed his new contract? If they didn't see this mess coming then they were total fools. This has had a real negative effect on Michigan's reputation. I wonder if Bo is just going nuts in football heaven about this mess?

May 10, 2008  11:41 AM ET

If WVU would have fired RichRod and not paid him the $4 million would RichRod be a 'jilted lover' by going after it? These buyouts work both ways as a protection not just when the coach is let go. Michigan would be wise to pay the money and let all of this go. The reason they don't? John Beilein had the same problem when he left WVU to go to Michigan and UM didn't pay his 1.5 million buyout clause. UM knows if they pay off RichRod's they are going to have an unhappy basketball coach. Of course, only winning 10 games this year doesn't give you much room to complain....

May 10, 2008  11:41 AM ET

AIrborne72,

Believe me, RR can focus on football even with this going on. It's why he's paying $700 an hour for his lawyer (who seems to be only worth $75 from some of the legal arguments he's made but maybe those arguments make sense in WV).

I still believe there is more to this story than we know but this is surely one bitter feud and the sooner it can be resolved the better. The next twist is that even John Beilein is going to challenge his buy out too!

May 10, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Why doesn't Michigan just pay the four million dollars? Then, everyone will be happy...RR is being a cheap **** just fork over the money and get on with your life! You signed a contract; hence, you must fulfill that obligation and if you don't live with the consequences...four million dollars is not that much money in today's college football...Rich Rod or Michigan should have no problem with paying this buyout instead they are wasting tons of money on legal garbage!

May 10, 2008  01:46 PM ET

West Virginia when will you realize this is doing nothing but hurting you and just let it go

May 10, 2008  04:40 PM ET

...and yet, somehow I find I still don't care about story #287 of the RR vs WVU saga...

He'll fight the $4Million because it's $4Million. The courts will decide the rest assuming they don't settle out of court for less.

I'm going to keep a running tab of the seemingly top stories on this site. I'll keep up with Charlie Weis, a story w/ Urban Meyer's picture, the BCS, Michigan/Rodriguez, WVU's closure, Perrilloux (I bet this one will die down though), USC, or UGA.

Michigan/Rodriguez count: 1
WVU closure: 1

May 10, 2008  07:09 PM ET

Sorry, I didn't see that the 'to hell with Michigan' story was about Rodriguez's new offense.

Michigan/Rodriguez: 2

Rod's claims are obviously bogus. If they handed you a contract with a buyout clause and said, don't worry we're going to remove it... why sign it until its removed? He had legal counsel and even a financial planner available so he's obviously full of crap. Pay the money you owe you dirt bag and then enjoy your sub .500 season at Michigan.

your a dope, wvu has never argued in the media, only the local media. People come on here and assume the WV media= word of mouth from WVU it isnt. Plus if WVU just lets RR out of his contract all their contracts with every coach they have on staff becomes as worthless as the paper its printed on. RR signed the contract in SEPT after two years of is he going to Nebrska(got a new deal) the following year is he going to ALABAMA(got a new deal) is he going to MIchigan(didnt get a new deal) RR is about himself im happy as a WVU ALUM with our current coaching staff, many of our recruiting potential is in thanks to what he did here but if he doesnt want to be here then so be it, but in order to get out of his contract he needs to pay his 4 mil. In my mind if he has no intention of paying the 4 mil NCAA should not let him enter into another NCAA contract with Michigan.

May 11, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Rich Rod is scum!!!!! He signed the contract . . . . . . . . period. He owes $4 million . . . . . . . period. I can't wait till he has to pay as it'll be as if he worked for nothing for 2 years (hahahahaha). On the football front, you Michigan fans really need to take a look at the Rich Fraud record pre PAT WHITE and with WHITE. PAT WHITE is what clicked at WVU (thankfully, he's running the ship this year and we're all anticipating another GREAT year) not loser Rich. Enjoy your **** coach who will be medicore. You my friends have NO PAT WHITE . . . . . . . . . , just a power hungry selfish guy who doesn't know what a contract means.

May 11, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Hey look, RR signed a contract with WVU that says he would pay 4 million dollars if he left before the second year of the contract. He left. 4 million may sound excessive but it isn't. It is the difference between going to a BCS bowl and ending up in a lower tier bowl for a couple of years...certainly within the time period of his contract. And WV had T. Pryor committed before he left. How big of an impact will that have on the future of WV football. RR then signs (agrees to a term sheet) that says he will pay 4 million if he leaves early, or more likely, Michigan will pay him 4 million if gets canned. RR can't have it both ways. Pay uyp and this will be over...end of story.

In business of this type, quieter is better. I;m not saying that WVU doesn't deserve it's money, I'm saying they're acting like hurt girlfriends by having everything so public. WVU wants its pound of flesh. Grow up and let the lawyers get it done in private!

May 11, 2008  11:35 AM ET

PS The reason why WVU is so public is because it doesn't appear to be about the money. Everybody on both sides should just clam up and negotiate in private for some settlement. Can WVU do that? I don't know. They've handled things badly there thus far. Hence, the "hurt girlfriend" tag.

May 11, 2008  01:10 PM ET

WVU has not handled this badly .. seems to me that I have not seen one negative RR comment from the WVU AD's office or other Adm .. sure I have seen things in the media from writers in Pittsburgh leaked from RR's camp and some things in the WV newspapers probably leaked from someone with the WVU community ..

RR would have gotten his $4 million if WVU had fired him .. he left he owes WVU the money .. after the money is paid WVU will be over him .. and support their new coach .. UM will support RR and both schools will live happily ever after ..

May 11, 2008  01:13 PM ET

George you are incorrect it is all about the money .. it is nothing other than the money ..

May 11, 2008  08:20 PM ET

C'mon - can't he go back to WVU and just kiss and make-up? Enough already - he has already been in Ann Arbor too long. Time to move on.
