M's manager: Rangers started incident

Richie Sexson on Friday was suspended for six games for triggering Thursday's benches-clearing melee. It started after Sexson took offense at a high pitch from Kason Gabbard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Seattle starter Felix Hernandez had plunked Texas' Ian Kinsler in the top of the inning. Sexson plans to appeal the suspension, and because of that declined to speak about the incident, apparently upon advice of the players' union. But Mariners manager John McLaren said the team plans to give Sexson some talking points for his meeting with Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of discipline . McLaren hinted that some of the Rangers said things that might have helped precipitate the incident, though he wouldn't give details. "There were some things said last night that we are aware of that we can use in our defense," he said. "We'll get with Richie so that when he does appeal he'll have some things that he can give Bob."

He deserves to be suspended. He is having a bad year and took it out on the pitcher. It was not even close. If he thought that pitch was intentional, then he has serious issues.. He could not even have played when Drysdale and Gibson were pitching. Give us all a break, too many hitters want the game to become T ball..

The pitch was high, but completely over the plate. He acted like he was looking for a reason to charge the mound, and used a high pitch as an excuse.

Sorry, but "they started it" might cut you some slack on my son's Little League team, but it's a shaky defense in the MLB.

Yeah, wasn't really close to his head. It looked like he had it in his mind he what he was going to do before he stepped up to the plate.

The dude is 6 foot 8 tall. If the pitcher wanted to hit him he would have, and then the big skirt throws his helmet at the pitcher when he gets to the mound, although i will give him his due becaues he admitted it was a chickens%$# thing to do!

He's a ****.

May 10, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Put up the batting tee for sexton or pitch under hand to this ****. These little **** ballplayers would not have made it in the day. That is from the 1920's to the 70's when baseball was baseball and not pussying ball that we have now.

I was at the WhiteSox-M's game last night. And for the first-time ever this year, the fans actually cherred loudly for Sexson instead of boo him to death. His boxing talent is more impressive than his .200 average.

He didnt even throw a punch. it was more of a helmet throw and flexin nuts before getting tackled.

The M's manager is acting like a 5 yr old. "the Rangers started it". Are you kidding me. What a tool!!!!!!!!

If these players would quit thinking we have to get even if they it our player we'll hit their's. With thinking like that, where does it end. ANSWER: it doesn't.

MLB should put a stop to it now, but we all know they won't, not with spineless Selig at the helm.

Why don't you just get even by winning the game? Oh, that's right the Mariners stink!!!!!!!!!

May 10, 2008  07:14 PM ET

If Frank Robinson were playing tday he might be suspended for the whole year.

May 10, 2008  09:25 PM ET

Thereis no defense for Sexson, the pitch was not within a foot of his head.

Seems like most of these guys could never have made it back in the 50's and 60's. Everybody is a coddled crybaby these days.

Sexson deserves the suspension.....Hernandez deserves one too.

May 10, 2008  10:42 PM ET

In the late 60s pitchers were taking over the game so they lowered the mound six inches. Everything in the last thirty years has been to make it easier for hitters because the Lords of baseball thought the fans were too dumb to appreciate a 2-1 game.
I think it is time to add three inches back to the mound, call the strike zone as written in the rule book and stop all this T ball that is going on now...

May 11, 2008  09:04 AM ET

I've been saying it for a couple years 50yearfan, bring the mound back up from 12" to 15".

May 11, 2008  09:28 AM ET

How in the Hell does someone use their helmet as a weapon, and only get a 6 game suspension? Then on top ofit, he has the nerve to appeal.
If this had been out in the street, that **** would have been in jail.

If you're a Seattle fan, aren't you kind of mad that Sexson didn't get more than 6 games....? I mean, isn't getting him out of the lineup a bonus?

hrill000,

True that...Vlad is the man! I miswrote about Manny, after he gets plunked he then runs to first after dusting himself off.
