Why Packers released Robinson

Posted: Saturday May 10, 2008 08:23AM ET

Over the past two seasons, the Packers invested a considerable amount of time, energy and patience in wide receiver Koren Robinson. Their payback was a couple of dozen catches, some kickoff returns and one touchdown. So, was it worth the risk of signing an admitted alcoholic whose brushes with the law left him practically unwanted in the National Football League and on the verge of a one-year suspension? On the same day the Packers released him because his chances of making the roster in 2008 weren't very good, general manager Ted Thompson said yes. After the Packers selected Kansas State wide receiver Jordy Nelson with their first pick in the draft and then selected San Diego State receiver Brett Swain in the seventh round, the writing was on the wall for the 28-year-old Robinson.

Dumb! The privilege of playing in the NFL is given to so very few athletes and yet, some of those given that incredible opportunity, blow it through sheer stupidity.

With all the help availabe these days to guys like Robinson, it just blows my mind that they would not take it to clean up their act and have a good, productive career and break out of the cycle of missery.

I guess some guys just can leave their getto mentality behind, even when success falls in their laps. What a shame! Can anyone save Koren from himself?

Report Offensive Comment

perhaps Koren Robinson should take the chris henry approach, publish a list of teams he wants to play for. then get his mail forwarded to Canada because the CFL appears to be in his future too.

Report Offensive Comment

Good point DCruiser, "privilege". Some just don't know how lucky they are.

Report Offensive Comment

if you guys read the article you would know that Koren has remained sober and alcohol was not a factor in his release. So I think it's safe to say that Koren has used the help that is available. So does that blow your mind DCruiser? I suggest reading the article.

Regardless DarrellGreen, the fact is it's still a privilege and these guys abuse it and take it for granted. Besides, if he is an alcoholic, in this party atmosphere we call the NFL, he's one drink away from screwing up again.

Report Offensive Comment

Yes, it's a privilege and there are a long list of players that need to be reminded of that. Koren isn't at the top of the list. We all know the names that would be on the top of that list and Koren isn't one of them.

The guy has remained sober. What else should he do? Obviously remaining sober isn't enough for you guys.

Report Offensive Comment

He still has some serious issues that need addressing even if he did use some help with his alcohol problems, DarrellGreen_28. Or, have you missed the part of the article that says he is "on a verge of a one-year suspension" by the NFL and is practically unwanted? I guess we see only what we want to see.

DCruiser, the problems with Robinson were a few years ago and before he singed with the Packers. As part of the Packers he got in no trouble at all and was a reformed individual. The one year suspension and jail time where from incidences before the Packers signed him and the Packers knew the one year suspension would be coming when they did sign him. Just admit you know nothing at all about this guy or the situation.

Report Offensive Comment

Yes, he has issues. I don't think I said he didn't. I'm just repeating what the article said and that is he has remained sober and alcohol was not a factor in his release. So, again, to answer a point you originally made. Yes, he is getting the help that's available to him and good for him. I hope he wins his fight with his disease. Feel free to keep knocking him down if you want.

Fan of Football, thank you for your almost rational explanation. That's more than most are capable of. You were doing very well .... until the last line.

Report Offensive Comment

Seems likes he has the skills. I think he'd be worth the risk of signing.

Fan of Fotball, let me clarify. I live in the Chicago area and, for better or for worse, I am a Bears fan. We all know that some Bears palyers are not exactly a good role model for youngsters and would not win any "good behavior" awards. But, I've seen Robinson play and he's got the tools and the talent to succeed. And, who knows? The Bears might give him a shot. Stranger things have happened in the Windy City!

Report Offensive Comment

DarrellGreen_28 , has nothing to do with us guys. Has to do with what the Packers decided. The rewards vs the risk wasn't paying off and they moved on. Nobody here made the Packers do anything.

In the NFL, everyone can be replaced!

Robinson's release was more than than likely due to his knee problem.

Report Offensive Comment

Personally I feel bad for Robinson, he worked hard kicked his habit and worked his way back. Also, aren't we all just one drink away from screwing it all up? who's to say that Peyton Manning won't go out and get drunk and run a kid over. Case in point Marvin Harrison. I hope someone gives him a chance, yeah he screwed up before but I believe that he he is reformed

Robinson is being cut because of the how the draft went. Jordy Nelson will now play the slot and I think we will be perfect for the system.

Robinson will get picked up. Once he got up to speed he wasn't that bad. He can play the slot somewhere and there plenty of teams that need his services. He hasn't been in trouble for awhile now and I think his risk is low. People here still bashing on what he did 2 years ago have to let it go. He admitted to his stupidity and he wants to move on. Some people here better check their closet before they start to cut someone down.

I don't think the Packers had issues with Robinson's personal behavior. He seemed to have cleaned up his act and not been a distraction. But his limited productivity from the knee injury and a year away from football caused them to question his true potential at this point. Remember, Robinson is a former 1st round pick and that carries higher expectations than merely being a slot receiver and situation player.

Jordy Nelson is probably considered to have a lot more potential, being six years younger with no health issues. He'll probably cost them less money than Robinson. Robinson may not be the only Packers receiver to lose his roster spot to Jordy Nelson. Ruvell Martin or Chris Francies might be next.

As for Koren Robinson, I wish him well. He made mistakes, did his penance and didn't complain. By all accounts, he's a good man and good teammate.
