Was Benson's boat targeted?

Bears running back Cedric Benson had been stopped ''several times'' aboard his boat in Texas before last weekend's arrest but never had been charged with a violation, his attorney said Friday. Attorney Sam Bassett said he sent a letter to Texas authorities to preserve any documents related to previous stops ''to get a picture of what's going on.'' Bassett said he couldn't pinpoint the number of contacts Benson had had with authorities but called the frequency ''not illegal but unusual.'' Yes, of course he was. He's black and every cop in America targets blacks. Come on, you didn't know that? Of course, the fact that maybe on several occasions he had been stopped and warned of violations, like drinking while boating, which is a crime. But no, let's go right ahead and speculate that this man would never break the law and the police have a vendetta against him.

Report Offensive CommentGood morning, Hooah!05
Does FN provoke racial tension just to increase the number of comments on their website, thereby increasing their ad rates? Nah, that's too cynical.

Report Offensive CommentHow does this affect the fact that he was, allegedly, driving the boat while intoxicated and then resisted arrest?

Report Offensive CommentIf you don't draw attention to yourself, you won't get stopped. He must have been doing questionable things to get stopped so mucy as is alleged.

Keep in mind it's his lawyer who said that. Hardly worth paying any attention to. But 300 posts anyhow.

Report Offensive CommentBoat profiling. Sounds like the Supreme Court needs to decide this once and for all..

Report Offensive CommentBenson, thou dost protest too much! You were (allegedly) drunk, buddy! Face the music!
If Benson displayed have the energy running the ball in Chicago as he is in defending, denying and accusing, he would have been a decent running back for the Bears and he'd have the sympathy of most of the Chicago Bears fans.
Poutty, spoiled rich boy who keeps finding new ways of making himself obnoxious!

Report Offensive CommentThe police were targeting him so that the Bears would cut him so they wouldn't suck as much next year. I salute them for that.

I never thought of that. Local cops can affect the rosters of the local teams. That's pretty sweet.
Jazinho | 05/10/08, 09:52 AM
Report Offensive CommentYeah! That's it, IrishR#1! A conspiracy between the Bears management and the Texas police!
Whatever the case, they did us a huge favor in Chicago. He done! He gone from the Windy City!

I'm sure it will come up in the comments.
CowboyDave | 05/10/08, 10:06 AM
Report Offensive CommentWell with Dallas's RB situation now he won't even be a blip on their radar. Minnesota either unless he wants to backup Petersen. Wouldn't that be a hoot. A Texas alum playing backup to an OU alum. Hee hee! Boomer Sooners!!!

Report Offensive CommentThere are several witnesses here that are supporting Benson's story. Not only what they saw with their eyes, but video from cell phones. Don't be surprised if Benson gets off on this one.
the jesus | 05/10/08, 10:14 AM
Report Offensive CommentI supposed the videos will show him being wrestled to the ground by the cops. What they won't show is how he acted when the police first arrived. They never do. Anyone ever see what Rodney King did before they beat him down? Probably not. Not defending what the cops did there but, come on, the whole story never really comes out. It's always their word against the cops and they get lawyers, Sharpton's, and whatever speaking for them.
Hooah05!! | 05/10/08, 10:17 AM
Report Offensive Commentthe jesus ...A few days ago the story was no one on the boat saw or heard anything.. Now he has a parade of supporters who are eyewitnesses. Hmm?
Too bad he refused the BAC test.. That alone tells you all you need to know...
Regardless, he is lousy running back who will be replaced as soon as the Bears can find someone...
50yearfan | 05/10/08, 10:19 AM
Report Offensive CommentThe story has become an item with "legs" for the press because of its ramifications. I say, let the courts decide. My guess is that things are going to subside - especially after something else comes along for our dear friends, the hack reporters at the Sun-Times.
