Yankees not interested in Wells

David Wells may want to pitch for the Yankees, but at this point, the Bombers don't appear to have much interest in bringing the aging lefthander back to the Bronx. Wells, who turns 45 on May 20, is hoping to pitch a shortened season, and a return to New York would clearly be his first preference. Gregg Clifton, Wells' agent, hasn't been in touch with the Yankees yet, but he has heard through different channels that Hank Steinbrenner may be interested in a pinstriped return for Wells.

Maybe the Padres want him back at this point...

Not easy to get both those phrases in the same paragraph. This story is on life support.

Report Offensive CommentOn another note...call me crazy, but Igawa didn't look nearly as bad last night as the scoreboard would indicate.
There must've been five ground balls that went through Betemit at 3rd. Only one was a legit error, but 2-3 of the others would've been playable by a better fielder. There was a LOT of bad luck in that loss.
Truth is, when a pitcher puts a lot of ground balls in play, he usually gets the win. And there were a ton more ground balls last night than there were hard liners. Lousy box score, but a respectable enough performance to get another start.

great point sox sider. The guy has had a solid career and it clearly broke down with San Diego - that is real sports news. As a Padre fan who lives in reality I expected this dubious news to lead the way this morning. The quality of this site's Truth&Rumors selections has fallen drastically.
What no Clemens loves little girls from the New York Post this morning????

Report Offensive CommentI'm glad the Yanks don't want Wells, but the back-end of the pitching staff is looking not so great. Seriously, does Igawa have any redeeming qualities about him? I understand he was solid in Japan, but he's been as bad as Matsui's been great.

Yankee64, that's a fair point. But I haven't seen him be "in control". Giving him another start does make sense because they paid him so much and they're trying to catch lightning in a bottle (like Aaron Small, Shaun Chacon, etc.). But Igawa is just not good.

Report Offensive CommentIgawa doesn't deserve anything. If we want to talk about pitchers deserving another start lets call up Kennedy.

Report Offensive CommentKennedy had a good start at AAA the other night, so Igawa is just a fill in until he comes back. Probably will give Ian a couple more starts down there I would hope

Report Offensive Commentawww, come on, we all know the Yanks could use some older, experienced players to help along their young team ;)

Report Offensive CommentLet see if I have this right, the Rocket crashes, the Wells sinks? He was a distraction when he was with the club before, and if memory serves, he did not respect the Yankee uniform, then.
As Mick says, "you can't always get what you want," or should that be, "there's no place like home?" Or better yet, you can't go home again.
What happens when your parents say, its time to be a man and stand on your own two feet, we just can't help you anymore?
Let Wells find a team that he hasn't already walked on. The Yankees have guys knocking on their door every day who don't have baggage with the Club. Give them their fair shot.

Report Offensive CommentWhen Wells was pitching in the Bronx, the fans would put up pictures of pitchers of beer for every strikeout instead of the usual K...with the way the Yanks have been playing, a little humor might not be so bad at this point...
