UFC counter-programs EliteXC
Posted: Saturday May 10, 2008 02:39PM ET
When EliteXC debuts on CBS on May 31, the UFC will devote an entire night on Spike TV to one of its biggest stars, Chuck Liddell. To lead off two new Spike TV specials, the night will begin with a repeat of "Ultimate Knockouts 4" at 8:00pm ET/PT. Previously only available on DVD, a one-hour documentary on the life of Liddell called "Ultimate Iceman: Chuck Liddell" will make its television premiere at 9:00pm ET/PT. Following that will be a special called "Liddell vs. Silva: UFC Unleashed," which features the UFC 79 from last December. This programming was designed to draw eyeballs away from the live EliteXC event on CBS featuring Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson.

Report Offensive CommentA live fight between two mediocre fighters (Kimbo and Colossus) will surely draw more ratings than Spike TV's UFC offerings that same evening. I don't know what to think of that.

Report Offensive CommentDont be so sure. Chuck is the most marketable and known fighter in the world. I'm 50/50 that UFC beats EliteXC for ratings tonight.

Report Offensive Comment"Tonight", you mean on the 31st.
Lidell is very marketable, but it's not a live fight of the guy. If it were, the ratings would go the UFC's way.
But in this scenario, I don't think so.

Report Offensive CommentI just know that I'll be using the "Last Channel" button on the remote an awful lot that night...

Report Offensive CommentLiddell appeals to white males, 20s to 40s....if Spike gets better ratings than EliteXC's event then that doesn't bode well for the future of MMA in my opinion because MMA needs other strong promotions besides the UFC to become strong.

Report Offensive CommentI feel what the UFC is doing is counterproductive to what they claim being their top priority being to grow the sport. Putting programming on the exact time of EliteXC's even is not for the good of the sport. A better and helpful idea is to maybe show some MMA before the EliteXC programming comes on CBS. But hey its a good UFC move not a good MMA move.

Report Offensive CommentAren't SpikeTV and CBS in the same corporate family? I'm surprised at this counterprogramming.

Report Offensive CommentI am personally looking forward to Gina Carano's fight which is on in the same card. I've never seen Kimbo fight but if it is anything I've read about I'm not so interested in it. See one street fight/back yard brawl you've seen them all.
