Gagne begs out of closer's job

08:06 AM ET 05.11 | Brewers manager Ned Yost wasn't ready to announce early Saturday evening that he would be removing Eric Gagne from the role of closer. "I don't sit here and make decisions five minutes after a tough loss," Yost said after watching Gagne saddle the Brewers with a defeat that never should have happened. Minutes later, Gagne took his manager completely off the hook with a pronouncement that was evident to anybody who has watched his work of late. "I don't deserve that ninth inning right now. It's very simple," said Gagne, who surrendered two ninth-inning runs that allowed St. Louis to pull out a 5-3 victory at Miller Park. "It's embarrassing."

As much as I'd love to revel in his complete collapse, it's actually sad to see an athlete virtually surrender like that. I mean, he's just a kid. Wouldn't wish that on anyone, even if he WAS on the Red Sox.

I guess I would be more impressed if he said "I do not deserve the money I am being paid and am giving it back"..

May 11, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Really, you have called this one after opening day at Wrigley Field.

May 11, 2008  08:58 AM ET

Maybe he'll get it back eventually. It looks like Lidge has gotten his mojo back.

The thing that annoys me about Gagne is that for a few years, he stole Mariano Rivera's spotlight. He was given a Cy Young and people were tabbing him the best closer in baseball, and it was all thanks to roids. Obviously as a Yankee fan I don't have much right to be complaining about a roider stealing the thunder of deserving, natural players (thanks to that embarassment Clemens). But yeah. As a big Mo fan, this is good validation.

Actually, more than the steroids, this is the sad but inevitable result of his inability to pronounce his last name properly. That Euro-trash pronunciation stands in stark contrast to that of GREG Gagne, who pronounced every letter in his surname -- the way God intended Real Americans to do! I don't care how they do things in Quebec; Monsieur Gone-Yay is being (over)paid in U.S. greenbacks to (under)perform for a U.S. franchise, so he can darn-well respect OUR cultural norms, including our pronunciation conventions. This is what slavish devotion to multiculturalism will get you!

There is no Mo subsititue.

Until Joba takes over that is......

May 11, 2008  11:12 AM ET

He had his peak and now he pretty much crashed.

It's all on the Brewers for signing him to be the primary closer anyway.

May 11, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Maybe Zito can join him to form a tandum of the most over-paid, washed-up, long relief, garbage time mop up men in the history of baseball.

Well I know everyone is Green Bay atleast has been bagging for GAGne to gone. When is stupid Ned Yost going to pull his head out of his butt and notice that this former HGh roide user sucks and he also needs to notice that Rickie Weeks is horrible. Fire Ned Yost and Melvin and a pile of crap too.

Dick Peligro, that may be one of the most racist things I've ever heard on here.

BTW, have you ever been to New Orleans? I dare you to go down there and tell them all to pronounce their name 'the american way'. The American way is racist to the rest of the world, who are watching the US right now. Race is a huge issue in the USA, and continues to be when the media brings it up almost every day.

Don't be ignorant.

Billsin, that may be one of the most sanctimonious things I've ever read on here.

BTW, have you ever watched 'Saturday Nite Live'? I dare you to check out Carlos Mencia and tell him he's a racist. It's called satire, you know -- as in humor. Try to get a sense of it, OK? Oh ... I've been to New Orleans twice. It's a great town, especially for a jazz lover such as myself.

Don't be witless.

He should give back his contract then. Let him keep the money for the games hes pitched and let him go. I turn off games when he comes in because I know they're going to lose.

May 11, 2008  01:36 PM ET

lol whatever DICK. Humor can still be racism. Or do you forget Micheal Richards?

May 11, 2008  02:35 PM ET

"lol whatever" ... now THAT'S an original comment, and very articulate, as well. Of course humor can be racist. Did you forget "In Living Color"?

When he was in his heyday the Dodgers would flash "GAME OVER" when he came in the game. I guess he's come full circle because they can start doing that at the Brewers games now.
