Bruins, Habs, Rangers want Hossa

If the Bruins' master plan is to try and sign Marian Hossa as a free agent July 1, it appears they will have serious and costly competition from at least Montreal and the New York Rangers. But a Pittsburgh source said the Penguins won't make any real effort to re-sign the unrestricted free agent: They simply can't afford to pay Hossa, along with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jordan Staal. His acquisition from Atlanta in February, thus, was a one-time shot at winning the Cup.

Well, if anything can get bostongm out of bed, I'm sure a Bruin rumor will.

May 11, 2008  09:02 AM ET

I'd also wager that there will be several other Teams interested in making a pitch to Marian. He has answered the nay-sayers with a solid playoff performance so far.

May 11, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Pens organization is awesome for this move.

May 11, 2008  10:40 AM ET

wasn't sure about the move when it happened...we gave up a lot...but it is paying off...it is going to be hard to keep him but I hope we do..

May 11, 2008  11:43 AM ET

a solid presence on both ends of the ice is an asset to any team, I just hope that no team intends to build around Hossa as a franchise player, because THAT he is not...

May 11, 2008  12:53 PM ET

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! HE IS NOT WORTH IT!!! As goCan said he is not a franchise player to build around. The problem is he wants the $ and length of a franchise player's contract.

May 11, 2008  12:54 PM ET

Baunded, he plays well or great when surrounded by greatness. I think the contract year thing forced a hop in his step.

May 11, 2008  02:52 PM ET

Yeah right, like the Bruins will open up their purse for a big name player.

May 11, 2008  06:39 PM ET

Malkin, Fleury, Malone, and Orpik will be back for the Pens. Hossa would have to come back for less money. Part of the attraction for Hossa will be playing with such a young and talented team that can clearly beat any team on any night.

The ones that may leave are Sydor, with Conklin, Roberts, and Laraque potentials for retirement/FA/ salary cap victims.

May 11, 2008  08:16 PM ET

Hmmm... if I'm Hossa, maybe I should take a little less money to play with a top-5 player who will get me the puck right where I want it every single time. After all, he wanted out of Atlanta because they weren't going anywhere.

May 11, 2008  10:38 PM ET

I have been saying that the Penguins are scary for some time and the foolish fans in DC, NY and now Philly just could not see it. They will regret calling someone Cindy..and they will wish he was just a great actor before all is said and done ...

May 12, 2008  07:15 AM ET

It would be a shame to see him go but you have to wonder about not wanting to stay with a team that is young and has potential unlimited to go elsewhere for a few dollars more. If I had $7 mil in the bank I'd be looking for a place to stay with that potential.

His backchecking is priceless, though. Too many people focus on the goals too much of the time. You have to honestly look at it and wonder how many goals he prevented due to that hustle on the backchecks.

May 12, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Therrien ,
I agree. yes, goals are important, but the back check is overlooked way to often. this is one of those things that real hockey fans notice, and idiots like bettman are looking for ways to increase scoring...to improve the game.

May 12, 2008  09:29 AM ET

I think it was a great move to get him when they did for the reason they did. He was at $7mil this season. He only had 60-70 points playing PP with Kovalchuk and now with Crosby & Company. He is going to want the same money. He is a good 2 way player, very smart, and can still score. So in the new NHL you have to put a price on that. Is he worth $7mil again? Don't think so. I think he wants to WIN.

Marian...ask for $4 mil and sign with the Red Wings!

May 12, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Outofshapand injured,
I think more people are more afraid of Malkin..I sure would be. goals in game 1 and he hits everybody? Maybe because they are all concentrating on Crosby?

May 12, 2008  10:10 AM ET

I cant see the Habs signing him.. He would fit well on the Bruins, and probably the Rangers too

May 12, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Shouldn't we wait until the off season to discuss where Hossa may land?

May 12, 2008  11:34 AM ET

DMitch....true enough....but I couldn't resist.

May 12, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Boston GM... i don't get how you say you would rather have Sean Avery but you wouldn't want Hossa?

May 12, 2008  11:54 AM ET

It's a tough call. Hossa came into the Penguins lineup with one catch: his lack of postseason accomplishments. The Penguins have essentially undone any chance of re-signing Hossa by realizing the fruit of the risk they took: Hossa is lighting up the playoffs for the Penguins.

If Malkin, Crosby and Fleury weren't around, he would be the Conn Smythe favorite. This postseason performance combined with a likely trip to the Finals will allow Hossa to ask for between $5-$7 million annualy. It will be impossible for the Penguins to match that demand when it is absolutely necessary to re-sign Malkin, who is quite possibly the best player in the world.

There is a small chance that Hossa will remain in Pittsburgh and settle for less money. He loves the city of Pittsburgh and his teammates. He has stated that he has never experienced such team chemistry in his career and believes this team has the talent to win multiple championships. Hossa is a player who changes the fortunes of any team he plays on. If he plays for the Rangers or Bruins, those teams become instant Cup contenders.

He will go wherever the money and the happiness balance out best. I HOPE ITS PITTSBURGH!!!!
