Who'll be next Suns coach?

Posted: Sunday May 11, 2008 08:44AM ET

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr, who won't make the same slide, will set up interviews this week to find his new coach. Kerr is expected to hire someone with NBA experience (but not limited to head-coaching experience) and a balanced approach to improve defense and depth while not moving away deterring from the Suns' style and identity as a top offense. It is easier to identify who the coach won't be, with Kerr and TNT analyst Doug Collins each squashing speculation that they would be candidates. A guess such as Avery Johnson would be wrong, too, with names under consideration that haven't been speculated upon publicly. Suns broadcast analyst Eddie Johnson is the first to come forward, saying Saturday that he would ask to interview for a job that might prove attractive, with star power and a 58-win average over the past four seasons under Mark D'Antoni.

I heard that too, he had a tad of a rocky start somewhere on the east coast, but hey, he seems like a grand fit! I'm sure his track record wasn't THAT bad :)

Rick Mahorn for headcoach of the Suns. The Suns should have seen Hack a Shaq coming. They did the same to Wallace when he was in Detroit, I'm waiting for them to do it to him now he's with Cleveland

Report Offensive Comment

Mark D'Antoni? That's pretty bad.

But this is one thing I'm happy Kerr is doing. He's getting a coach who wants to improve depth and defense while keeping with the uptempo style. That's one of the few good decisions he's made since arriving in the Valley of the Sun. My fandom of loving the Suns may come to an end depending upon whom they hire.

Why isn't Avery a candidate?.....This position would be perfect for him

Isiah Tomas would be a great fit. You just have to give him two years to make over the roster with his kind of players..

Kerr will pull a Pat Riley or Isiah Tomas and in a couple years of mediocrity and failure come in and coach himself. So whoever the new Suns coach is it will be a 18 month
public execution by Kerr.

LOL, you know that was the first thing that I thought. Wouldn't it be ironic and prove a TON to Cuban if Avery coached the Suns past the Mavs and won a championship. The Suns have great talent. They just need defense. That's my 2 cents. You are starting with one of the best PG in the entire NBA and unlike Kidd he has a shot that is dangerous.

Kerr made the Shaq trade, which was stupid beyond belief. He should have kept Marion and done a sign-and-trade with him. Now, he's got The Big Albatross, a guy whose salary takes up way too much of the payroll, and completely changes the team's offensive identity.

This team will probably not even make the playoffs next year.

Report Offensive Comment

Yes, that Shaq trade was a moronic move, plus the team has no depth after trading away a bunch of draft picks as well as Joe Johnson and Kurt Thomas. They might as well pull a Seattle and trade Nash and Amare for lots of picks and youth so they have a foundation the same time they have cap space when Shaq's $40M is off the books.

Everyone thought the Mavs would dismantle... Looks like it might be the Suns instead. D'Antoni got the best out of Nash and if anyone coming in thinks he'll play D; they're crazy.

I agree Abe.

That leaves pretty much no one. Why not have Steve Kerrherrrr come down and try!

t's too bad that they let D'Antoni go. It was a mistake to do so. There aren't that many experienced coaches left in the Coaching Carousel / Musical Chairs. Neither Van Gundy is available, and neither is Doug Collins. Rick Adelman would fit in well since he likes the Western-Conference-style running game, but he's establishing himself in Houston.
If I were Kerr, I would try to re-start talks with Rick Pitino to switch out of college coaching and re-try the NBA. If Rudy Tomjonovich (spelling?), Musselman, or other experienced coach wants to re-emerge, that would also be good.
If Kerr cannot manage one of those, then the best thing would be to sit back and wait to grab the next experienced coach that becomes available and dismissed from a current team as a playoff fallout scapegoat.
Otherwise, it looks as if they will have no choice but to go with Eddie Johnson.

You want your players play Defense then hire Knight. He can **** slap everyone inlcluding Shaq for not playing D. I wonder if Barkley would want to coach. That is another interesting candidate with tough mentality.
Avery Johnson would be a hallarious hire especially if the Suns beat Mavs next year in playoffs. Cuban would go ballistic with Nellie doing it to him and then Avery.
Sarver needs to check himself on letting a good coach get walking papers. The team is built for D'Antoni's coaching style and the next coach in will have a horrible/terrible time adjusting with the players that Suns have. I guess he will be the sacraficial lamb (spelling check).

What about ISIAH THOMAS ??
Seriously, think about it for a minute. Perchik says that the next coach will be a "sacrificial lamb" anyway, so it's worth taking a chance on the man.
Everyone wants to know whether Isiah got a raw deal in New York. Maybe he is a really good coach who was thrust into a hopeless situation. That being the case, only a fresh start and a new chance can help determine how good he is.
It is important to remember that Isiah did a decent job in Indiana before going to New York. Isiah can clearly coach well when he is given a mature team of veterans. He does have trouble developing teams with young, inexperienced players.
If for no other reason than an interesting experiment, maybe the Suns can give Isiah a one-year chance. That way, risk is minimized. If something goes wrong, there is no long-term commitment. If by chance he does well, his contract can be extended by one year, then by two years, etc.

ok, i'll go ahead and tell YOU guys, but no one else...i'm gonna be the next coach of the suns...my agent told me not to tell, but forget him, i deserve this job and i'll be really awesome at it...first thing is to get a good 2 guard...i like bell, but he can come off the bench or maybe more of a bruce bowen type guy..i think bell gets too many shots...2nd we get a solid 3..now i know we had one of the best in the matrix, but he gone...so lets look at some other options...grant hill would be perfect if he wasn't 40...so lets see, how about one of those young guys from portland...they've got 2 or 3 up there that would be nice in any offense...don't worry we'll still run as much as we can..we've still got nash and amare...by the way, i'll just tell kerr to shut up if he gets to jabberin' at me about more touches in the post...amare isn't tim duncan steve-o...and we've got shaq in there...so lets get a little deeper bench and get busy...peace...
