Rutgers recruit starts recruiting

Tom Savage already seems to have it all. The 6-3, 231-pound quarterback has a big arm, the ability to read defenses, tons of press clippings and has given a verbal commitment to play football at Rutgers starting in the fall of 2009. So what was Savage doing on the Rutgers Stadium field Thursday night, at the Big Time Football Showcase, surrounded by hundreds of high school football players still hoping to earn a college scholarship of their own? Wide receiver Aaron Hayward of Penns Grove, linebacker Carlo Calabrese of Verona, and sophomore running back Corey Brown, Savage's teammate at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, Pa., were among the quarterback's targets on Thursday at an event where college coaches weren't allowed to be in the building.

He better land some good prospects soon because when his coach leaves for PSU after Joe Pa's retirement, he'll need their shoulders to cry on. But maybe I am wrong about Schiano and he'll stay at Rutgers and continue to build the team into a great NE powerhouse of a program.

Report Offensive CommentI agree with you The Warden all the way about Schiano. We'll see. Regarding Savage, I have been telling RU fans to chill out with the kid due to how meaningless verbals have become. But to see the kid "recruiting" already, I'll shut up about it for now. This is old news by the way, and the Star Ledger had this published before today (Sunday). Fannation needs to get things straight in Truth&Rumors.

Report Offensive CommentI agree as well, but one thing is for sure, Coach Schiano will leave the program better than he found it-job done.

Report Offensive CommentTry as they will, but Rutgers has a limited ceiling playing in that conference. They're not as good at WVU, Pitt recruits better, South Florida has leap-frogged Rutgers, and recruits aren't going to be attracted by bowl matchups in Toronto versus MAC teams. Calabrese is a PSU lock, by the way.
