Phillies may talk to Lidge, Burrell

It's not official Phillies policy. It's a preference. General manager Pat Gillick prefers not to talk about contract extensions until after the season, which was the case last year with centerfielder Aaron Rowand. Gillick believes in-season talks can become a distraction, so he prefers that players and managers concentrate on the job at hand. But the Phillies and Gillick are in a unique situation. Gillick has said this is his final season as GM. The Phillies also have two players who might be worthy of in-season talks: Brad Lidge and Pat Burrell.

Yeah, we'll talk to Pat the Bat and Brad Kneelidge, but we still give one of our bast players 900,000. MMM?!?!?

And... They're proving to be right on that. Our 10 million dollar man is Phillies property until at least 2011. Pat and Brad are both currently doing sensational and are in a contract year.

howard and hamels are under their control for a while. why sign them long -term now? then they won't have any more cash to re-sign a burrell or lidge, or a decent replacement for them (or at least that would be the excuse).

and seriously the way howard's hitting do you really want him signed to that $200 mil contract he wants anyway?

What does $10 million dollars get you nowadays? 200+ strikeouts from a player who should've settled....

Lidge has been lights out this season....They should throw him 6-8 million per year.....for 4-5 years...

Pat Burrell...I'd throw 6-7 million his way for another 3-4 years....you have to admit....he's been consistent....in RBI's....Walks...plus he's healthy now....foot's no longer a problem....

On ESPN radio they posed an interesting question....Would you trade Ryan Howard to the Yankees for Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy straight up? I'd do it in a heartbeat....

May 12, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Lidge sucks.

May 12, 2008  12:08 PM ET

No question I'd make that deal as well.

May 12, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Lidge sucks.

Weren't the Sillies trying to unload Burrell halfway through his current contract? He was booed regularly until the middle of last season.....

Lidge sucks.

Let me correct your spelling. That's PHILLIES... you know, the National League East CHAMPS. That's one of the great things about Philly, we let you know when your not playing well and we also cheer you like crazy when you are.

May 12, 2008  01:38 PM ET

People were more disgusted at the fact that Burrell wasn't performing up to his $15 million dollar a year contract....

If Burrell was a $4-5 million a year player....would people be booing him as much? Probably not....

Pedro Feliz was supposed to be the best 3rd baseman free agent out there....we signed him....still he's hitting in the .230's....don't hear much about him....because he's making 1/4 of what Burrell's making...

I think Burrell will stay, but at the severe salary reduction....

Lidge has found his slider and fastball....you can't lose a premier closer like Lidge....

Some of these players can't justify asking for $10's of millions a year from a team....and then not do what it takes to perform at that level....Look at Howard....look at Myers....a hitter who can't find his "hands"...and a pitcher who can't find his "velocity"....What a joke....

That's true... They don't call him a Met killer for nothing.

May 12, 2008  05:09 PM ET

Sillydave, sorry for the spelling error.

You are an idiot.

I'm just glad they're acting like they're willing to pay money for good players. I'm tired of moves like David Bell (instead of keeping Placido Polanco) and Adam Eaton and Jamie Moyer and letting Aaron Rowand go. We could still have him in CF and Victorino in LF instead of wash-up Geoff Jenkins. Don't just talk, pay them!
