Avs haven't contacted Roy

Although professing shock at Colorado's decision to severe ties with Joel Quenneville after three seasons, Patrick Roy has definite interest in rejoining a franchise he twice led to the Stanley Cup as a player. Roy stressed that he has not yet been contacted by the Avalanche. The list of potential candidates for the Colorado job is expected to include highly experienced and well-respected men in the business, with three-time NHL coach of the year Pat Burns being whispered in league circles as a possible successor for Quenneville even before the Avs officially had a vacancy.

Entertaining yes....a winner...No. Leave this goof where he belongs. Let him end up in Sr. A with his kids..

Gotta disagree, Pete. Pat Roy is pretty much a winner. 4 Stanley Cups, with a few Conn Smythes sprinkled in for good measure, pretty much make the guy a winner. He may not be the classiest the league has ever seen, but his desire to compete was never questioned

I don't think so either, This would be a real gimmicky move. This organisation would resort to something so cheesy. it would be like resigning all the former players you won your last Stanley Cup with...oh, wait a minute

What one man does on the ice does not always transfer over to coaching. Roy was a winner on the ice. So was Gretzky...how's that working in Phoenix? I think if Patrick is serious about coaching at the NHL level he should at least be an assistant for 1 or 2 years.

OH, and looks like I was right about my AVS letting their coach go if he had a poor showing in the playoffs. When you keep starting a goalie that continues to require being pulled mid-game in the second round of the playoffs and don't try anything new...then your ability to coach is apparently deminishing. Avs fans are like Red Wing fans. We damand more of our coach and players and we want winners. Q was not delivering....good bye.

Roy has a Memorial Cup on his resume as a coach as well - making him as eligible as Ted Nolan was his first go round with the Sabres.

I still don't think he's the guy for this job, at all, but saying he isn't qualified is not the right basis to judge it on. How much coaching did Carbonneau do before taking the Head job in Montreal, and likely winning the Coach of the Year (Jack Adams) award this season? I just don't believe in hiring coaches who have played with the players they are supposed to coach. Too hard to seperate the relationships.

Oh, and Gretz almost got a team that was picked to finish last this season into the playoffs, nearly garnering himself a Jack Adams nomination in the process. I'd say his ability to coach was proven this season, and that team will be playing come April next season...

goC please done put Roy anywhere near Gretz!!!!! ;)

May 12, 2008  12:18 PM ET

too bad about Forsberg though, If he had stayed healthy, who knows wht he could have been.

I was defending Gretz - it was Tribe that brought him up, in what I took to be a negative connotation, which is, of course, unacceptable

Comment: Keep it that way!

conjecture and rumour seems to be much more fun, but I don't think he'll be contacted

Roy as a NHL coach eh? Its not impossible. Would he intimidate his goalies though? Thats the question.

I'd be afraid of him meeting them at center ice if they ticked him off during practice... that'd just be bad for every body involved

May 12, 2008  03:15 PM ET

This just isn't going to happen. Roy is great, we all love him, and I think that he'd make an excellent coach. It wouldn't surprise me if he is the Avs coach one day. I don't think that it'll be until after Sakic and Hejduk retire though. It'll be Tony Granato or Pat Burns.

May 12, 2008  06:13 PM ET

The Avs are in a decline and need to reformat the team because it just like the good ol days. I wouldn't mind making him an assistant tho. How about DU Head Coach George Gwozdecky?

May 12, 2008  06:13 PM ET

Why did the Avs fire Quennville??

May 12, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Sorry, end of the day, just isnt like the good ol days..
