Report: Mayo took illegal benefits

Allegations that a Los Angeles events promoter provided USC basketball star O.J. Mayo tens of thousands of dollars in cash and benefits, if proved, could lead to the Trojans facing forfeiture of victories or more serious sanctions. Rodney Guillory provided Mayo with a flat-screen television, cellphone service, cash, meals, clothes and other benefits dating back to when the top NBA prospect entered high school, according to Louis Johnson, a former confidant of Mayo. A compliance director for another West Coast university said potential penalties facing USC would hinge on whether school officials were aware of wrongdoing. Penalties could include forfeiture of victories, probation, loss of television appearances, scholarship losses or other recruiting restrictions. Mayo denied any wrongdoing in a statement.

There's nothing in this world worse than a SNITCH... Why is this dude all of a sudden coming out of the woodwork telling this stuff?? It's kinda fishy.. People are just jealous.. I'm willing to bet that they promised Johnson some type of position when Mayo went pro, but for whatever reason that didn't happen so now this Bi*&h **** little snitch comes out with this mess... Even if it was true I wouldn't even dignify this prick for the mere fact that he'd been going along with it the whole time, and now for some unknown reason, he wants to be the Bi*&h that he is and go crying to the press...

May 12, 2008  09:04 AM ET

WAIT....WAIT...let me get my shocked face on.....NEVER saw anything like this comin' down the pike. Like my friend Vince once said:

WHAT THE HELL IS GOIN ON OUT THERE???

May 12, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Snitch or not, that's Mayo and Bush implicated in taking cash from agents, with Reggie's case obviously being much worse. The gauntlet has to come down sooner or later.

USC is still not as bad as Notre Dame getting away with everything though just because they are a little ol catholic school where Knute Rockne played.

May 12, 2008  09:57 AM ET

I'll tell you why this guy snitched. He was frozen out by another greedy ****. I don't hate USC but there seems to be a BIG problem with their program getting kids who can't follow the rules. And USC has on it's side the fact that the NCAA is a bunch of inept, turn head the other way leadership who is probably upset that they have to look into yet another problem with a school thta is a cash cow for them. WAtch the NCAA quietly excuse this situation away.

May 12, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Keep in mind regarding penalties that it will be very, very difficult for the NCAA to prove USC the program new about Bush and Mayo receiving money. Especially in the Bush case. His ex-con of a step dad was accepting money from an ex-con trying to become an agent or manager. I'm not sure the NCAA has much of a case against a school when the program wasn't orchestrating the cheating.

May 12, 2008  10:17 AM ET

this 'sounds' more substantial than the allegations dogging ReggieBush's time at USC -- sounds like some criminal activity, not just NCAA rules violations -- are the feds and IRS investigating? ... does the NBA care?

May 12, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Why does USC let these greedy inbreds into their program? Do you really think USC needed an agent giving Reggie Bush $200K and housing in order for him to play for the Trojans? USC should be able to get any kid they want in Cali right now without the illegal activity. Playing for PEte carroll and a storied program is enough. And if it's not, then you let them go it's not worth it.

The NCAA has turned a blind eye to them, but sooner or later it will stop and they will be popped. But like I said, it's so unnecessary for the caliber of program that they have going right now.

May 12, 2008  10:22 AM ET

LSUDYNASTY.....Are you familiar with the Bush case at all? There's absolutely no proof whatsoever that USC orchestrated or even knew about Bush's ex-con of a stepfather taking money.

May 12, 2008  10:24 AM ET

A USC guy accepting money? Never heard of it.

May 12, 2008  10:29 AM ET

Every program has this on some level; if you look at 2 or 3 kids in the last 10 years out howny BB & FB players alone, what are the precentages here? According to the snitch this was going on long before Mayo contacted USC. If the program had any knowledge of this then we will have to pay the price or get Bellichek to make some call for us.

May 12, 2008  10:29 AM ET

how many

May 12, 2008  10:33 AM ET

I'm shocked. Surprised. But seriously, everybody knows these kids have been getting money since they were about 15 and younger. When you start recruiting kids in the 8th grade, you should know something is wrong. To single out USC would be wrong. The NCAA can't really control or stop this.

May 12, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Chi Town Steve,

Remember Chris Webber and Ed Martin at Michigan? Michigan knew nothing and caught with their pants down. But, unlike USC, once UM found out that the NCAA was investigating, UM cooperated FULLY. When all the facts were found, UM was HIT HARD even though they had no involvement in it. The point is that a school can be blindsided but it happened on their watch and ultimately it's the school that gets the punishment at the end. And it's my belief that USC might not have known exactly but they made sure they played the don't ask don't tell even when they saw warning signs.

Are you going to tell me no one at USC ever asked how Reggie Bush was driving around in a new used car? Or how Mayo was getting new clothes and watching a nice expensive new Plasma in his dorm room? Are you that naive to think that no one knew a thing? And I am going to assume that there were warning signs at UM with Webber but Fisher and crew turned a blind eye. In the end it decimated UM's program and that idiot WEbber has NEVER apologized cuz he felt and still feels he was right to take the money.

Again , USC is lucky that the NCAA HAS NO BALLS because if it did, USC's football and basketball program would be toast.

May 12, 2008  10:44 AM ET

When you are a coach dealing with a recruit and you find yourself talking to his posse and not one of his parents you need to ditch the kid....

May 12, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Unless it was mentioned and I missed it, USC's coach was approached by one of MAyo's handlers (not sure exactly who it was) about him wanting to come to USC. the Coach couldn't call Mayo. He was told that Mayo would call him. To say that wasn't a warning sign is an understatement. USC walked into this mess and not they are going to pay for it, I hope.

Stinky Bush and Rancid Mayo is a combo that is giving USC a horrible case of indigestion and deservedly so.

May 12, 2008  10:52 AM ET

LSUDYNASTY I am sure there must be some logic in your statement "USC is still not as bad as Notre Dame getting away with everything..." but for the life of me I cannot find it. Have you lost your cajun mind? When has any ND player been accused of taking thousands of dollars from an agent (Bush, Mayo)? I like USCs program, always have, but they have clearly made the decision in recent years to "dance with he devil" by bringng in players that clearly have no intention of graduatng, except to the $$$ of the professional level. They therefore have no accountability to the storied USC program.ND was close to that during some of the Holtz years but they steered away from it and their program has had trouble competing since (as so many of you are happy to point out with great regularty). Say what you want about their recent football failures but I assure you the people running that place will tolerate that way before some of the negative things continually coming out of many of the so called "major" programs...including yours...!

May 12, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Imagine in this wonderful world of athletics-the biggest cheaters in sports (USC) having problems with another 1 and done. I have said it once and will say it again, I would rather lose and be a Notre Dame fan, than cheat to win like the **** at Southern Cal.

May 12, 2008  12:18 PM ET

After the obvious statement that this happens everywhere in college sports, I move to the way the NCAA expects the colleges to police themselves. Some colleges at least do a minimal amount of self-policing. At least enough to keep up appearances as they throw a player or two under the bus now and then. What I find interesting with USC is the "I see nothin, I hear nothin" approach to self-policing. USC is not alone in this approach, but at some point the NCAA has to be brought to accountability in the way it lets colleges police themselves.

There is more than enough evidence that athletes (at least two) at USC recieved inappropriate money while at USC. As in the case at Michigan with Weber, USC doesn't have to know about it for there to be penalties to the sporting programs.
