Griffey denies Seattle trade rumors

Ken Griffey Jr. cleared up the trade speculation that arose this week after the Red right fielder reiterated his desire to retire as a Seattle Mariner. Or did he? Asked if he would accept a trade back to Seattle, where he spent the first 11 of his 20 seasons, he said, "I haven't even thought about that. "When I finish playing, I want to retire there," Griffey said over the weekend at Shea Stadium. "Does that mean I want to play for them? That's my first organization. That's who I want to retire with. When I'm done, that's where I'm gonna go. I give examples like [NFL running back] Emmitt Smith. He signed a one-day contract [with the Dallas Cowboys] and went home."

Amen, the Reds should concentrate more on a winning record than worrying about griffey right now. They finally have the pitching ability to be a winning team, now they just need to prove themselves. good god i'm sick of this drama...

20 season in and he talks like he plans to play another 5 years..

May 12, 2008  10:22 AM ET

talking about trades and retirement signals the end of interest, ambition, motivation, and performance. like Mantle, Griffey suffered injuries to the extent that I'll always think 'what if ...'

He's missed the equivalent of 5 seasons, so he's got fresh legs.

griff needs to hit his 3 homers so we can ship him away and bring jay bruce up. i loved having him in cinci but he was a dissapointment mainly as a leader. we need a fresh start and our young talent is the answer

May 12, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Reds suck.

May 12, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Trade him to the Dodgers for Andruw Jones.

Can you say HOF'r......nice career Ken Jr. You can rag on him all you want. His name isnt tied to roids, and his reputation isnt tainted by bad attitude or hussies coming out of the closet.

Ease up, Strahan talks like a fool thats no secret. And he has been a mouth alot longer then he has had a ring

May 12, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Oh, and he has quite a few shorten seasons to match KG Jr anyways

May 12, 2008  03:33 PM ET

RJ-Dub,

I am hope Andruw can turn it around. However, it has been almost 2 years since he hit for average.

May 12, 2008  05:13 PM ET

We'd love to have Jr. back in Seattle. He'd add a little punch to the line up and, seeing that we've been averaging about 15,000 fans per game during this latest skid, he'd put butts in seats. Welcome home Jr.

May 12, 2008  07:36 PM ET

I think we should send him back to Seattle the man has done virtually nothing in Cincinnati other than fill seats with his big name. He was old news when we got him and he's old news now. I think we should let him go and get some young talent that actually hits the ball instead of sits the bench claiming injury for almost 10 years.

Junior is a Hall of Famer. I'd love to see him go to Seattle and finish on a winning team. Play right field, bat in the middle of the order. Trade Kenji and a prospect to Cincy for Junior. Get it done.
