Why Bengals won't sign Alexander

The reason the Bengals didn't take a running back in last month's NFL Draft wasn't because they wanted to sign Shaun Alexander, who had been released by Seattle. The reason is that running back Chris Perry, their oft-injured 2004 first-round pick, appears to be healthy and ready to play this year. Perry, 26, who has played just one full season in four years in the NFL, has two years remaining on his rookie contract. The Bengals want Perry to return to the role he occupied in 2005, when he played in 14 games with two starts and had 51 receptions and a 4.6-yard rushing average as Rudi Johnson's backup.

If he were a car you would just part him out at this point.

The Bengals have Rudi Johnson, Kenny Watson, and Chris Perry. Where exactly did an over-the-hill, broken down RB like Alexander think he was going to fit in?

Shawn has a few years left and can still help a team in a more smaller role.

i agree with Trainwreck, there is no need for an elderly back who is more than likely not meet his 2005 potential

Comes down to picking DeDe Dorsey or Alexander. Appears the Bengals are willing to stand pat with DeDe at this point. Would have been nice to see Shaun come home. He still could if Perry gets hurt before anyone signs Alexander, which is statistically possible. Since theres limited interest in Shaun at this point and Perry goes down more frequently than a drunken Lohan.

Because the Bengals are not capable of making good decisions. Alexander will probably put up big numbers with another team now.

May 12, 2008  09:44 AM ET

yeah like the eagles are capable of solid decisions. how many star WR's you all have? well at least you have more stud CB's than you can start.

when it comes to running the ball, Cincy can and does. And consistently produces pro-bowlers. we don't buy other team's star rbs, jim anderson makes stars. the eagles can't say that, and havent been able to say that for 3 decades.

"Because the Bengals are not capable of making good decisions. Alexander will probably put up big numbers with another team now."

I have to agree w/ 50yearfan. The only real benefit I could see Alexander bringing to a team is in more of a mentor ship role.

Field Marhsall - do you think you're original with that comment? Pretty stale.

Alexander cannot do much at this point. We need a quick-hitter, someone who can recognize a hole and get into the secondary quickly. Rudi doesn't do that, but he's a 20-25 carry back. A healthy Perry/Irons could fill that role as the spell/3rd down back.

pw- I like your commentary. You seem well-informed.

One has to wonder if he's truly healthy.....I suspect that he's damaged goods and has lost more than a step.

May 12, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I think Field Marshalls comment was great, and once again, DS, until you get your first contract please stop reffering to your team as "WEEE" Your not a Bengal and never will be

Shawn could return punts and run first down plays. He could be a great back up with a contender. You might be surprised what rest, confidence and less pressure will do to a player. He can produce; just not at a level a feature back can.

May 12, 2008  11:37 AM ET

lol part him out

May 12, 2008  11:39 AM ET

here's the reason...he's done....

May 12, 2008  11:41 AM ET

It's amazing that he was MVP three years ago and now can't find a place to play. Not a viable starter anymore, but he would be a good change of pace back.

Making it into the playoffs 8 out of the last 10 years, going to 4 NFC Championships and a SB would indicate good decision making. How many playoffs have the bengals been in in the last 10 years with your stud WO's? I seem to remember only 1.

As for rb's I guess you forgot about Westbrook. I'd say are running game is not to shabby.

St. Louis Rams: You need to sign this guy.

Why would the Rams want him? Just as insurance for Jackson?
