The Red Sox are still talking with the Rockies about a deal for reliever Julian Tavarez. The talks, reported by the Denver Post last week, remain active, according to a major league source with knowledge of the situation. With Bartolo Colon making progress in his rehab assignment in Pawtucket, the Sox might be trying to find a spot for Colon, though Tery Francona told reporters this week that the Sox were not considering using Colon in relief.

This is pretty depressing. The Rox just need to let Josh Towers or Kip Wells be the long relief guy. Tavarez won't help in any other role, and I don't want another starter that won't make it out of the 5th inning. We already have three of them that have started this year in Redman, Jimenez, and Morales. Leave him in Boston, and bring in Roger Clemens.

yeah, i bet you could get clemens for a little under what the yankees paid him last he..hahahahaha...

May 12, 2008  04:25 PM ET

Or just pay off Brian McNamee. Then Clemens could come for free.

Tavarez just got released.....guess a trade is off

TenRingsSTL, I think you may have that mixed up about Tavarez. I thought I read breaking news this afternoon that he was designated for assignment - not released. Can anyone else confirm which it was?

May 12, 2008  09:28 PM ET

He was designated for assignment. So the Sox have 10 days to release, trade or send him to the minors.

Sorry - my mistake. I thought I read that he was released outright.
