Suns in no hurry for new hire

The process of Phoenix's first off-season coaching search since 1988 officially begins Monday with General Manager Steve Kerr calling to arrange candidate interviews in a selection process that is expected to last weeks...He is not naming names, so identifying assistants on his list is pure conjecture. The assistants generating the most buzz are Boston's Tom Thibodeau and Detroit's Michael Curry, but both are defensive-minded coaches, and Kerr is not looking for a drastic change in the Suns' style.

Kerr is not in a hurry? Really? Let's say that he were in a hurry. Whom would he pick?
Duh !! Obviously, there aren't any good experienced candidates available, so he is forced to wait. As the playoffs drag on, maybe more coaches will be released by their teams. These include teams currently playing and on their way to being eliminated, as well as teams that are already out but who have not yet fired their coaches.
Whatever happened to Eric Musselman (former coach of the Warriors and Kings) ? He should return to coaching.

Since they got to pat Shaq all those bucks may as well make him coach and at least get ten cents on your dollar !!!

This advice is brilliant!
Shaq is on the verge of retirement, and maybe they can get better value by converting him from a player to a coach. He's played for many good coaches (Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Van Gundy, etc) and understands the importance of conditioning.
He has done some stints as a Police Officer and knows how to maintain discipline.
Definitely worth considering.

LONE STARRRRRR, oh wrong thread again.
Kerrrr will take over.

Make Steve Nash the Coach as well as the PG. Just pay hin a couple mil more every year. Would be much better than Kerr or any other available ones. Unless Kerr is in love with a certain isiah (self professed championship caliber coach)

Would love to see the Suns make Shaq an NBA Head Coach. I would have to take my doctor with me to the games to make sure I didn't laugh so hard that I might die! But that's a decision we don't have to worry about Kerr making. He's not that stupid.

May 12, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Kerr will not be in a hurry. Why? Like JL said, "All of the good experienced candidates are no longer available..."

Except for Avery Johnson. Avery would be a good pick for the Suns with his defensive mindset, Western Conference knowledge and Championship experience. He wasn't called the Little General for nothing and would bring toughness to the Suns. But as a Spurs fan, I'd hate to see the Suns pick Avery because they would be better immediately.

So what should Kerr do right now? Forget the thoughts on hiring ANY unproven assistant coach and hire a true NBA coach. Hire the best coach that is and will be available this season: Avery Johnson!

What will Kerr do? He'll wait.

I'd love to see Kerr take over! I might even be happy to see the Suns win.

I hope Avery Johnson ends up in the Eastern Conference.

"Kerr is not looking for a drastic change in the Suns' style." If Kerr doesn't think that a change is needed, and include defense as a priority, the Suns will continue to get the same results we've seen for the last 5 years. Offense wins games. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

May 12, 2008  12:04 PM ET

I AGREE WITH NIGHTMARE-IF STEVE KERR IS SMART HE BETTER GET AVERY JOHNSON NOW-BEFORE SOME OTHER TEAM GETS HIM.

May 12, 2008  12:04 PM ET

The Suns can still comeback next season. Avery could work with the player personnel he has but he must calm down his ego. He still has a lot to learn but I give him credit for his achievements. Give Avery the reins. Kerr needs to stay in the front office - he is not coaching material.

Here is a funny thought,

Avery Johnson could do what Don Nelson did to the Mavericks last year in the playoffs. Mark Cuban's head would explode!
