Stars, Red Wings trade nasty words

Posted: Monday May 12, 2008 07:09AM ET

The NHL fined Mike Ribeiro, Chris Osgood and Steve Ott for actions they took in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, but suspended nobody for today's Game 3. Still, the war of words between the Stars and Red Wings continued. "I don't know if it was that bad of a slashing to be talked to," Ribeiro said when asked if he was talked to by the league for a match penalty for slashing Osgood, the Detroit goalie. The league decided that the actions balanced out, but it did fine Ribeiro for his slash, Osgood for a butt end of his stick to the face of Ribeiro. Red Wings forward Darren McCarty said Ribeiro's actions were "gutless."

As a Wings fan, I didn't think the whole exchange was really that bad. All I know is that tonight Ribeiro better be expected to sit down a few times on the ice. This could amp up the series a bit, and going on the road, that could be what the Wings need to hold their momentum right now.

Im going to have to agree...as a dallas fan i thought it evened out as well. i hope this makes the series a bit more exciting on both parts, scoring and hitting. red wings are without a doubt out playing the stars but they are on the road now so hopefully the stars can pull the next 2 wins.

Nice no suspensions.

McCarty will layeth the smack down....

Report Offensive Comment

Now watch, you'll see Ribeiro jump off the ice any time he sees McCarty hop the boards for a shift

Report Offensive Comment

McCarty won't be close to the ice as he is a fourth liner and Ribeiro is a first unit guy. If McCarty ends up playing against Ribeiro, the Stars might just climb back into this series.

As for the incident, both were to blame, but I blame Osgood for inciting the incident, he definitely leaned into Ribeiro with the knob of his stick. And, later when questioned, he took the chicken route and denied doing it. If any player were deliberately struck in the head area by a goalie's butt end, they would be pretty angry. Ribeiro shouldn't have swung his tick, but remember, the goalie's equipment is used to absorbing 100 MPH shots... Osgood was not close to being hurt, even though he flopped like he got hit by a cruise missile.

I don't think McCarty can skate with Ribiero even if the Wings do try and match them up.

I don't think the Pens will beat either team in the west

McCarty's a washed up loser eh? The guy worked his ace off to clean up his life and get back to where he is right now, and you guys are trashing him? I'm pretty sure he has one more goal in these playoffs than anybody on THIS site has right now

Uh oh...the old "nasty words" again.

I don't condone what Osgood did, but I think he was trying to be get a little retribution for how his guys have been treated in front of the Dallas goal. With not as much work he's been able to have a good view. Franzen and Holmstrom have been planted in front of the goal, and doing it cleanly without having to be in the blue area, bulldoze Turco or swat at the puck after the whistle. To try to regain that ground, Turco has been pushing the player out, smacking them in the back of the head and slashing them. I think Ozzie was "sticking up" for his own guys, since none of the Stars are close enough to the goal during the game for him to do the same.

But it was not one-sided, and it's good there were no suspensions that could drastically change the outlook of games. Both deserved to be fined. With the extreme use of sticks in the past, I feared that they would suspend Ribeiro anyway. I want the Red Wings to get Dallas's best shot.

Turco is a nice guy but if you get near his crease he will PUNISH

Report Offensive Comment

Trade words all you want, it's wins that count and Dallas doesn't have any of those to trade.

For Osgood to have such little regard for the future success of his team, by jeopardizing his participation and taking a poke at the face of an opponent, is both incredibly selfish and stupid.

Not only does it show horrible sportsmanship, but not much class either. He's just lucky he didn't break a nose, knock out a couple teeth, or catch Ribeiro's eye... if he had, the Wings would be playing Hasek and lose serious momentum. If I were his coach, at any other level, I'd bench him.

It's easy to minimize this incident, since nobody was hurt, but punitive sanctions are meant to teach a lesson and prevent incidents in the future. If you only take serious action when someone is hurt or put out of the lineup, what kind of message does that send to young players?

This is a perfect distraction for Dallas and one the Wings cannot afford. All Osgood did was motivate a potentially nasty team and make things more difficult for his team.

Santapig-
Go back and watch film of the best goalies to ever play the game. They clear thier crease in whatever manner they need. I'm talking Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, Belfour, Joseph and the list goes on. If someone is going to camp on top of them, and YES Detroit has been camping ON TOP of Turco then a goalie is going to pester him with little jabs and pushes. At least he hasn't slew footed someone like other goalies I've seen. Go back to game 1 and watch the 3rd goal. A blind man could see that not only one foot but two were in the crease and he was basically leaning on Turco. They don't get in the crease? That is laughable.
The good thing for Detroit is two fold. 1. They have bothered Turco enough that he is worried more about the screen than the puck at times and that in itself gave them their go ahead goal in the second game. 2. Osgood hasn't done what Turco is doing because he hasn't had to. To everyone's bewilderment we don't see the same pressure on Osgood in front of the net that we see on Turco. Yes, players come flying in and there are some questionable things but I'm talking about PLANTING a person basically in the crease of Osgood like the Wings have done to Turco. That isn't Osgood's fault that the Stars haven't been putting pressure in front of the net. Osgood hasn't had to be as good as Turco has since he has so much more talent in front of him but to his credit he has done an excellent job in the playoffs.

McCarty's a washed up loser? I'm a Stars fan and even I have to disagree with this statement. There are tons of teams who would love to have McCarty. I don't like him because he is the punisher for the opposing team but if he were part of the Stars I would root for him. It's part of the game. One thing I do agree with others on is that McCarty can't keep up with Ribiero. I hope they put him on the line against Ribby because it will give us that much more of a chance to score. Personally I think the coaching of the Wings isn't stupid enough to pull such a stunt when everything is going their way. They have won what, 8 straight? Why mess it up with some vendetta that could only awaken the Stars and help them back into the series. As a Stars fan I'm all for it! LOL! I'm telling it like it is as I see it.
Last comment.. Pens top Detroit? Uhhh.. yeah, that is a joke right? Even as a Stars fan I have to say that Detroit has the talent and combination of veterans that every team whishes they had. If Detroit doesn't win it all this year it will be because they shot themselves in the foot and didn't play to their potential. Can't believe I'm saying something good about the Wings but it is true. Stars have youth. We will have many years of playoff hockey. I don't think we have all of the pieces of the puzzle to get past Detroit unless sheer grit prevails and/or Detroit emplodes.
