Garnett honors late teammate

It's hard to believe, but it's been eight years since the tragic death of NBA player Malik Sealy. Sealy was 30 on May 20, 2000 when he was on his way home from a birthday party for Timberwolves teammate Kevin Garnett and was killed by drunk driver heading the wrong way on the freeway. His life still is on the minds of former teammates Joe Smith and Garnett. Smith, now with the Cavaliers, and Garnett, with the Celtics, have tattoos on their arms honoring Sealy. Every time Smith and Garnett meet on the court, they do a pre-game hug, a small remembrance of Sealy. Amazingly, the drunk driver who killed Sealy has been arrested twice since for the same offense.

A terrible tragedy indeed. KG and Joe Smith are class acts to remember their past teammate.
I trust that the NBA set up a continuing fund for Sealy's family.
KG and Joe Smith should take their remembrance one step further and get tickets for Sealy's family to attend the playoff games. They should pay to fly out his relatives and put them up in a hotel, so that they can remain connected to the sport that their Malik played.

a little off topic!!

"A little off topic"...
Really ??!!
I thought it's NEVER off-topic to talk about Lakerland, and how it's so lovely there.
Arejaydub and lakerfan seemed to indicate that the loveliness in Lakerland was so profound that it must be mentioned in every topic!
We are all indebted to them for teaching us how it is the only topic that should be mentioned everywhere.

garnett has been helping Sealy's family since then. They were close.

May 12, 2008  09:36 AM ET

The big part of this article that everyone missed is the fact that the **** that killed him is not only still free to walk around, but had been twice since convicted of drunk driving... He should be in prison for life probably

May 12, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Jay L. ,

Taking Sealy's family to games is helping them? That is as shallow as it gets.

How about helping Sealy's kids by establishing a college fund or a monthly donation to keep them off the streets?

If money is not an issue with the Sealy family, a phone call to check on their needs and to say what's up is more than enough. I trust that KG is doing that already.

As for that drunk ass-hole who killed Sealy, why isn't he in jail for good. Castrate the S.O.B and lock him up for good.

May 12, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Unreal that a guy kills someone while driving drunk, and then goes out and does it and gets caught twice more. If he got caught twice more i'm betting those aren't the only 2 times the guy has driven drunk. I wish the judge would make an example out of the guy and throw him in the clink. What a POS. People are such idiots. Just get a cab you moron.

sealy was a class act and one bad mother at st. johns.....the dd should be castrated....

May 12, 2008  11:43 AM ET

I followed Malik b/c he was St. John's alum. It's a nice gesture by these two men to remember Malik.

PS: I hope the Lakers lose.

Easy there 7... where does it say that KG isn't helping out? And if he is or isn't, why can't he also bring the family to a game? The article doesn't say either way on either issue. I agree that the drunk driver should be in jail, but the added hostility toward Jay L is a little much. I remember when this happened and I remember how big of a tragedy it was. That KG and Smith still remember and honor their teammate tells you how great Sealy was.

The driver was sentenced for 4 years in prison after killing Malik and was recently caught again drunk driving and will now have to serve 8 years.

May 12, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Are we missing the point here? The guy that killed Malik has been arrested TWICE since then. I will take a guess that he has driven drunk moe than the two time he has gotten caught.

May 12, 2008  12:07 PM ET

I met malik here in LA...he was really cool and down to earth...just a regular dude who didnt flaunt his money or his fame ...it was sad when I heard a few weeks later that he had been killed....and to know that the idiot that killed him has been caught twice since then is ridiculous

Sadly, the trend will continue. The system doesn't want a solution. There's no money in it. If the guy had been locked up for manslaughter and subjected to 10-25 years, he would think twice about doing it again. As long as an individual can get a slimeball attorney to to have the charges reduced, it is only a matter of time before the next Sealy. There was a similar case here, and the guy has 8 DWI's, and has never done time.

Man you are somthin else.

It's a shame all around. I hope the guy stays in for 8 years. You'd think after killing someone you'd think before getting behind the wheel. Get drunk all you want, because I'm sure you have demons, but stay off the street, or at least hit a tree next time.

May 12, 2008  01:10 PM ET

hard!

May 12, 2008  01:57 PM ET

This guy that killed Sealy was just arrested a few weeks back again for drunk driving. How many times can a person get pulled over until they yank your licence? KG & Smith are class acts for doing this and remembering Malik. I still remember that morning when it was all over the news saying what happend.
