Coburn possible for Game 3

Posted: Monday May 12, 2008 08:01AM ET

His left eye is a mess. So is his nose. But Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn said last night that he is a "possibility" to play in Game 3 tomorrow after missing all but about two minutes of last night's 4-2 playoff loss to the Penguins with a facial injury. Coburn needed more than 50 stitches to close a gash around his left eye and near his nose after Evgeni Malkin deflected a shot from Sergei Gonchar under his face shield just 1 minute, 41 seconds into the opening period.

That's just another example of the toughness on this team. Flyers may be down but by no means out. Flyers will win the next 4 to take it in 6.

Sure they will, Dave. The fact that they look like they skate like I do has nothing to do with it.

Sorry, Dave. I'm just as much of a fan as you are, but when the Flyers can't come up with a win when they easily could have sealed it is not a good sign. Richards and Hatcher are the only two players who showed up this series. Briere must be homesick for Quebec.

Right now its a race to see who is going to lose to the Red Wings.

If the Pens did dodge the Flyers they should send the Pens a thank you card since they got to the finals instead of going out in the first round.

Let's not get carried away. They played pretty well in game two, if not for the Downey error we would be looking at 1-1.

I never gave Philly much of a chance but if they overcome their injuries and playing like old men, I will really eat my words. It is nice to see that some people remember the 'holy trinity' of brothers in hockey. (pf36) -- are Wings hoping for a Philly comeback?

Let's see what happens in game 3 before we hang it up. The Flyers have shown me in game 2 that they can still win. Holding on to hope...

I forgot to mention that it was pretty cool that the Pittsburgh fans gave Coburn an ovation for getting off the ice. I know damn well that a Pittsburgh player wouldn't be given the same courtesy here in Philadelphia. The fans here can be pretty embarrassing.

Phlyfan36 is just a disgrace to the Philly school system. It's you're not your for what you're saying. But that aside, I think the Flyers will win Game 3, I think they're clawing their way back into it and will make it a series. The Downey error was an unfortunate happening and I felt terrible for him. The Flyers problem right now is that they're not crashing the net when they need to. Make Fleury feel uncomfortable, it is the only way they'll come back.

Philly might win game #3, but they are done. The Timmonen injury was bad enough, but if Coburn can't be as effective, the other stiffs can't handle the pressure or the minutes. Poor Derian Hatcher is getting embarassed by the shift, and they don't have any guy back there that can step up and play major minutes without hurting the club. Bring back the Watson brothers!

Got to admit, you don't sound like much of a fan of Philly. From what I understood they were cheering what they thought was their team taking him off the ice.

Coburn is tough he will play, but the Pens will still get the sweep because the Flyers are beat up and the Pens are more talented!

Report Offensive Comment

Maybe if Coburn comes back he'll get 2 mins for making ugly faces at Crosby. The refs are a disgrace in this series. What a mess the NHL has turned into. The Pens are a good team, they shouldnt need phantom penalties to be called on the Flyers to win games.

Report Offensive Comment

Coburn's return would make a small difference in the Flyer's hopes for this series. But in the end, it is too much to ask for them to win 4 of the next 5 contests. It's unrealistic considering the Penguins depth, talent, speed and two-way talent on multiple lines. It's tough to imagine the Flyers stealing more than one game when even the Penguins 4th line can create a beautiful scoring opportunity worthy of second line talent. Crosby, Geno and Hossa are just too much to handle.

PENS ALL THE WAY!

Report Offensive Comment

Lets be serious here Panterfan. The Pens arent dominating the Flyers in anyway. In fact both games have been very boring. Neither team is taking over games. The Pens scored goals on powerplays that were handed to them by the NHL. Malkin is allowed to cheapshot Briere 3feet away from a ref, but Hatcher isnt allowed to play textbook defense on Malkin. I didnt realize it was hooking when the blade of your stick brushes off of Malkin's leg as you're d'ing him up.

They could jump in a time machine and put a young Bobby Clarke in there and it wouldn't save their sorry hides. Pens in 5.

PhillyDave, i agree. If it wasn't for Downie's RETARDED play, it would definitely be 1-1. The Flyers winning this series is remote at this point, but if they can win games 3 and 4 they have a real good shot. They've been battling adversity all season. That said, if Briere and Prospal continue to be invisible on the ice, i don't think the Flyers don't stand a chance.

Report Offensive Comment

Just because the Rangers went down in 5 doesn't mean that Philly will. Rangers played with no heart except for game 4. I think your reaching just a bit.
