Ravens may use three-receiver set

One of the questions heading into Ravens minicamp was the pecking order of the wide receivers. But Derrick Mason, Demetrius Williams and Mark Clayton aren't battling against each other. They are teaming up in pursuit of a common goal. If this unit plays up to expectations, there is a possibility the Ravens could use three wide receivers as their primary formation. "It's not a possibility. It will happen," Mason said yesterday as the Ravens wrapped up their only mandatory minicamp of the offseason.

Whatever makes Joe Flacco more comfortable.

May 13, 2008  07:33 AM ET

not sure this plays into troy smith's strengths. 2 te sets that would help block for an undersized qb that likes to scramble might help him adjust to the nfl more.

This is Flacco's team. I love Smith, but his time is not going to come. I wouldn't be suprised to see Flacco start the season.

More weapons on the field for the rookie. I don't care if it is Smith who is undersized or Flacco who is a rookie OR Boller all need protection. And if Ogden isn't coming back that really becomes an issue.

yeah, throw Flacco into the fire like you did with Boller. Boller looked good in practice as a rookie as well. Wait till Flacco starts getting hit. It's either Boller or Smith as the starting QB at the beginning of the season.

Or, how about throw Flacco into the fire like they did with PEyton Manning. You draft a guy in the first round, you let him play. Troy Smith is not an NFL starter anyway. Good player, Good kid, but he'll wind up being a pretty decent backup.

Joey Flacco is prety good, but I don't think he's anywhere near Peyton was in '98.

It's too bad for B'more that McNair couldn't stay healthy - he would have been a great mentor for Flacco/Smith.

How is this some kind of revelation? The Ravens will use three WR sets....no **** sherlock...that's one hell of a breaking news story

May 13, 2008  10:24 AM ET

8 comments on a Ravens story and not one mention yet of Ray Lewis and the word Murder, Stab, etc.

This has gotta be a record !!!

May 13, 2008  10:25 AM ET

p.s. salvaje50, i think they're saying this because the Ravens have rarely used more than a 2 WR set unless it's 3rd and long. that was the old offense, now we'll see the new one w/ Cameron, which is a REAL offense, unlike Billicks, Cavanaughs, etc. etc.

Ravens may use 3-WR set... it was a sunny day yesterday.... I may poop tonight before I go to bed.

WHO GIVES A CHIT!

May 13, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Mason isn't what he used to be, Clayton isn't what he was supposed to be, and who the heck is Young?

May 13, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Other teams have tried this to keep the pressure off the QB...it works well in Pittsburgh. If nothing else, it forces the defense to adjust.
However, it only works if you have a QB that can get rid of the ball, not hang on to it. I haven't seen enough of Flacco to say how he is.

May 13, 2008  10:52 AM ET

c note, i agree.

but where did you see Young at ?

did you mean demetrius williams ?

lol here come the sacks.....

Demetrius Williams is a good WR who came out of Oregon. He was a mid round pick a few years ago. He was a really good target for Kellen Clemens at Oregon and had a couple of slow years so far.

Derrick Mason, Demetrius Williams and Mark Clayton, does this strike fear in any defensive unit in the NFL. NO! They are better of with the 2 TE set and protecting their QB. Do this and they should win more ball games. Play in a 3 WR set, 5-11 again without question!

May 13, 2008  01:12 PM ET

A 3 WR set keeps a defense from putting eight men at the line to stop the run.
A defense that blitzes takes a big chance.
From the 3 WR set, you have to still run, and throw a lot of slants. It's not a formation to play every down, but the 2 TE set is really predictable if used every play, unless the goal is to run 70% of the time.
Use a big RB in the 2 TD set, then bring in the sprinter on the 3 WR set.
The point is to give a D a lot of looks, that takes way more pressure of a young QB than having an extra blocker, and letting eight guys pin their ears back.

This offense is Piss Poor. At least they got rid of the 76 year old qb - McNair. When your top receiver is Derrick Mason, it's time to focus on the run and passing to the tight ends. It's great to see the Baltimore Teabaggers suck.
