Did Pats film SB XXXVI walkthrough?

When former Patriots employee Matt Walsh meets with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell this morning in New York, one topic figures to trump all: Walsh's recollections from Feb. 2, 2002. The St. Louis Rams' walkthrough practice prior to Super Bowl XXXVI was held that day inside the Louisiana Superdome, a session that, according to an anonymous source of the Boston Herald's, was filmed by a member of the Patriots video department. The Patriots denied the report the day it was published, Feb. 2, 2008. If Goodell determines the Patriots did film the practice, he has said, he would revisit the issue and could impose more penalties against the club. He could have his answer this morning. Walsh's lawyer, Michael Levy, told the New York Times last week that Walsh never claimed to have a tape of the Rams' walkthrough, and was not the source for the article. But that doesn't mean Walsh can't provide more background from that day in New Orleans, and answer the key question - whether there was any filming by a member of the video department.

Without evidence, no one can really make this claim. Matt Walsh's credibility isn't looking too good right now, given he stole whatever tapes he had.

You never heard his testimony and really, never even met Walsh, you have no explanation as to why he kept the tapes, why his resume wasn't perfect or any of the information a trial court or investigator would demand but you want to toss out anything he may have to say before he has said it. Soooo if he exonerates the Patriots -- we can't believe that either. The way the Pats defense played? Suspicious.

For the NFL Commish to gloss over any of this stuff is going to be the biggest mistake he could make. When the results are in, if the Pats were cheating then both the coach and the owner should be publicly vilified by the NFL--not just fined.

prove it or shutup about it.

May 13, 2008  07:25 AM ET

In the end, I doubt Goodell will really come clean with the public about what actually was going on.

Hopefully, Senator Spector will not be as quick to sweep everything under the rug.

As for you pundits that feel U.S. Senators have more important matters than the NFL on their plate, remember, the NFL has been very active in seeking out YOUR taxpayer dollars to underwrite their business expenses. When they took taxpayer dollars the NFL gave up the right to run a closed shop.. If the games are crooked our representatives should step in and clean house if the NFL is not doing the job properly. As a major source of NFL funding the American taxpayer has earned, and deserves, the courtesy of honest games....

babeghost, and how much money does the NFL put into local coffers? It's very obvious that Spector is biased in this regard.

Sorry if 'cheating' by our elected officials bothers me more than cheating by sports teams.

Weren't you calling for Belichick's head on a plate a few days ago?

May 13, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Here we go again... move on...

May 13, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Walks like a duck... talks like a duck.

Belichek and Co. already have been proven cheaters. So, logic dictates they cheated then. Big deal. The league will do nothing. What can you do? Have them replay the Super Bowl? Strip the rings and hand them to the Rams? Never happen.

So, this is all just a charade. Belly-CHEAT will just get a stern warning to never let this embarassment happen again, and the Pats will be let go of any further punishment.

Let's all move on.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

So over spygate. Does anyone really care? The Patriots are a great team whether or not they videotaped Kurt Warner doing #2 in the port-o-potty or not.

Okay. Glad to get that all straightened out. Now what to do about my neck. HA!

May 13, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Its great that some of you sit on here and say What evedince? Yea the guy who obviously taped every game he thought was a tough win, probably every game period decided suddenly to skip the most important one because his concience got to him and he decided that would be cheating and too far? Give me a break, He did, they used it to their advantage, end of story. It was 6 years ago, its over, the rings are made, their is nothing anyone can do about it

May 13, 2008  09:27 AM ET

How do we know the other team didn't have tapes too?

It's one thing to have fun with it and call him Belicheat and get on Pats fans for being obnoxious. But these holier than thou people who want to have a federal investigation (on the taxpayers dime) are nuts. Look what happened with the steroid investigation with baseball. All it did was ruin people's names. Not worth it IMHO.
