Mariners scout checks out Griffey
Posted: Tuesday May 13, 2008 06:33AM ET
The Seattle Mariners covet Ken Griffey Jr., want him as much as a loving mother wants to see her children on Mother's Day. Club President Chuck Armstrong wants the Cincinnati Reds outfielder desperately, wants him to inject excitement into the Mariners and boost attendance, because Armstrong knows Griffey is a deity in the Northwest. That's why Duane Shaffer, a special assistant to the executive vice president, was in Shea Stadium on Sunday, May 11 to check out Griffey.

Trade him if it makes since for the Reds, he's not part of their future anyways.

Griff's a classy dude, he says he'll play out his contract as well as he can but doesn't lie about what he wants. Maybe he knows that he hasn't lived up to his end of the deal so much.

Report Offensive CommentCan you imagine if he never got hurt... Imagine what his numbers would like. He could have been the best in the game and knocking on the door af 800 by now.

Report Offensive Commentfigure once he hits 600, the reds and mariners will get serious about working out a deal to let jr finish where he started.
touche, agree, his numbers would have been way more if his body could have sustained. but at least he didnt juice. he played with class. and will go into the HoF with class.

Report Offensive CommentThe Mariners need to keep something in mind.
The last time they had an injection of the "Griffey Excitement" they didn't get any rings out of it and they need to be very clear what it did for the Cincinnati Reds.
I'm not saying this to slam Junior. Without a doubt he is a true HOF'er but thus far, he has not been the missing piece to anyones scramble to win the World Series....
Bring him back if he is going to turn losing into winning. If you want him to sell tickets just announce to your fans that you are now tanking the season.

Report Offensive CommentGriffey has been a class act and put up with a lot of grief from the Cincy fans for not being the player he was in Seattle. I would hate to see him go and would rather ship Dunn off to some AL team in need of a DH.
That being said...what will the Mariners be offering?...
A third baseman that can throw to 1st base?
An outfielder that can be a speedy leadoff hitter that Dusty will actually play over trainwreck Patterson?
A young catcher of the likes Cincy hasn't had since....well I don't know the last time outside Bench they've had a legitimate catcher...(Bako is great now, hitting AND trhowing out runners, but how old is he?)
Dagwood | 05/13/08, 08:11 AM
Report Offensive CommentHe does need out of Cincy and to a team that needs leadership. Griffey clearly can still play defense and can still produce at the plate. He does come with a high price tag. Anywhere but the yanks.

Report Offensive CommentCan we throw in Dunn as well? To compensate us for Dunn we'll demand one water cooler and a sleeve of golf balls.

Report Offensive Commenthey jrj0514, you must not be from cincinnati. griffey is not a leader, he is the laziest player in the bigs
i havent seen him run out a play to first base in 5 years.......let alone try to get to a lazy pop fly that b phillips somehow gets to everytime from 2nd base

Report Offensive CommentGriffey is one of my favs, but I"m more of a reds fan than a Griffey fan. The Reds should trade him now while one team is this interested. It would be a win win for everyone. I doubt he plays another full year before retiring.
Did you see him yesterday? Drop one ball and almost dropped another. He needs the DH as much as we need Josh Hamilton back. Actually, if he gets traded to the Mariners this year I wouldn't be surprised if he retires at the end of this season.
hollowman777 | 05/13/08, 11:05 AM
Report Offensive CommentDefensively the Reds are a trainwreck. Anyone in trade could be an upgrade as long as they can catch and throw.
Really. We have a DH in LF, a soon DH in RF, a 2B at SS, SS at 2B, and a defensive black hole at 3B. Oh yeah, outside of journeyman Bako, catchers that are completely inable to throw out runners.
Did I miss anyone?
