Garland can't see Sox return

While Jon Garland covered numerous topics in his pregame session with the Chicago media that covered him for his first eight major-league seasons, the one that stood out was his pending free agency...What's not going to happen in his mind, however, is a return to the team with which he won a World Series ring in 2005. Asked if he could foresee ever returning to the White Sox, he replied, ''My feeling is if they wanted to keep me, they would have kept me.''

Now, you shut your mouth!

I understand that overpaying for mediocre veterans -- espcially pitchers -- has more or less become a Yankees tradition, but really ... must it always be conjectured that the Yankees are in the market when guys like Garland and Sabathia are mentioned?. do sports agents plant these stories? the Yankees did not go after Santana, who would have really helped them now and in the future -- or is that the reason that the Yankees-haters think Cashman will continue to squander the Yankees money and success potential?

They WILL go after Sabathia. Probably not Garland.

May 13, 2008  12:47 PM ET

They would have taken Santana if they didnt have to trade to get him. It wasnt the money, it was the players they would have had to give up. After seeing Damon in CenterField, thank god they didnt trade Melky. Hughes and Kennedy will be just fine.

I miss Garland, he was a good young pitcher with potential.

May 13, 2008  03:12 PM ET

I do not believe that Hughes and Kennedy, individually or jointly, will ever be what Santana is and will be ... and while I like Melky, he does not win every fifth game for the Yankees ... there's no real purpose served by rehashing the deal that wasn't made, I understand, but the Yankees are bogged down right now with only a couple of reliable pitchers and maybe three reliable hitters -- and that won't get the job done if they seriously plan to get to postseason play

Garland's future contract will depend on what type of season he has this year.
There's a lot of baseball left to be played, folks. Garland would be a better fit in a place such as Oakland, San Diego, or Minnesota. How about Atlanta? Texas? Who knows?

Wait til September and we'll see how good he's been in '08.

May 13, 2008  08:51 PM ET

How many years does someone have to play before they don't have potential anymore?

May 14, 2008  04:56 AM ET

As a white six fan Garland's not worth much. He was good for 2 seasons, sub par the rest. He also has a non-challant attitude. He stays out and drinks more often than not. It seemed like some games he gave very little effort. Also, he is a ground ball pitcher, and whenver he faced a really good offensive club they found holes in the infield. White sox would never take this guy back. I bet the yanks take him just because of their recent history in aquiring terrible, overpriced pitching staff.
