Malkin's elbows irk Flyers coach

Danny Briere laughed off questions about officiating and whether Pittsburgh Penguins stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin get more calls than they deserve. He didn't want to get too involved in criticism, especially now that the Philadelphia Flyers are down 2-0 to their cross-state rivals in the NHL Eastern Conference final. Briere took an elbow to the back of the head from Malkin in the second period of Sunday night's 4-2 loss in Game 2 at Pittsburgh. The blow left him dazed and the Flyers forward missed a shift. "That is something that should be called," Flyers coach John Stevens said yesterday. "We all know how the league is cracking down on blows to the head. If anybody knows that, it's us."

im not gonna sit here & **** about calls, but the ref was right in front of Malkin when he did this ...

May 13, 2008  08:34 AM ET

But lets be serious, if 1 of our players hit Malkin or Crosby w/ an elbow, we'd get a major or sum b/s.

May 13, 2008  08:34 AM ET

It was a total cheapshot and the ref was standing right there. Its just an example of how the Pens can do whatever they want.

Memo to NHL Officials: The face of the NHL is the tandem of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. No matter what they do, elbow, third man in, slew foot, dive, whine, punch....etc....It must be let go....We must have their faces on the ice as much as possible.

I haven't had a problem with the officiating in the playoffs, except for a few missed calls....but to be fair....call it both ways because both teams are guilty of that stuff....

Geez,

I guess the same rules that used to apply for Bobby Clarke and CO., intimidate the heck out of opposing players by any means possible no longer applies in Philly, mainly because other than Mike Richards, their top offensive players are scared of their own shadow. Toughen up Philly, this ain't cricket.

As the Flyers continue to say "it is what it is". They know its going to happen, They just have to fight through it and hopefully get the wins they need. They've handled the officiating no calls like true professionals. So hats off to the Flyers on that.

May 13, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Toughen up about what?
All were saying is that it completely cheap & the ref obviously ignored it...

May 13, 2008  08:42 AM ET

The pens can do whatever they want....like score a goal that is not a goal. Face the music, the Pens are a much better team than the Cryers! Carey Price was a sieve in the net for les Habs and now you've got a real goaltender to face. Quit you're cryin and play some hockey...hell, you've got at least 2 more games before we eliminate you.

May 13, 2008  08:46 AM ET

You Pens fans are retarded .. No1's crying, were just showing the obvious .. Malkin's cheap shot was as obvious as Crosby's goal

And im pretty sure Hatcher & Upshall have been throwing their weight around

May 13, 2008  09:02 AM ET

This one heads back to Pittsburgh all knotted up. DESPITE our team being slayed by injuries and referees.

May 13, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Malkin sure is dirty. Y didn't Philly send out a goon?

May 13, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Listen to this guy, he says Philadelphia is going to tie it up and bring it back to Pittsburgh. You???re killing me this morning.

May 13, 2008  09:23 AM ET

I may be a Pens fan, but if it happened, call it. If they're the best team they'll find a way to kill off the penalty and win .. and nobody wants to win the series and have question marks afterweards.

If you truly believe the series will be tied, I've got a great piece of real estate in Florida to sell you at a bargain price..barely any swamp land around. Upshall may be throwing his weight around, but Kennedy kicked his a##...and he's our smallest player! Hatcher is a no talent goon, all the hockey skills went to his brother. Kap may bounce off checks but I thought the idea of a skilled winger was to score goals, how many does he have? Umberger? Hartnell? Lupul? Upshall? Shall I go on?
