Ravens invent position for Suggs

The Ravens and Terrell Suggs avoided a grievance by essentially creating a new position, Suggs' agent confirmed last night. The sides reached an agreement on a one-year franchise tag tender worth close to $8.5 million, which will pay him as a hybrid defensive end-linebacker. It is believed that the NFL Players Association and the NFL management council are finalizing details to sign off on the compromise. The next step is to see whether the Ravens can sign Suggs to an extension, keeping him with the team beyond this season.

Suggs rules.

The position is called "Inside Whinebacker."

It seems fair to me. Suggs had a valid point. Smart move by the Ravens . It was not a lot more money, the player is happy and the Ravens will have him in camp.

Funny......need this position/player on my fav team.

50 I have a feeling this will effect Mathias Kiwanuka at the end of his rookie contract.

hybrid positions for contracts should be a nono. how long before someone demands to be the highest salary for both positions..

May 14, 2008  08:33 AM ET

It works out for both sides pretty well. Suggs gets more money but not as much as if he had been tagged as a DE and the Ravens get their impact player. I hope they are able to resign him.

BigBlueLube..You could be right, but remember, this had to do with the franchise tag for positions, not a new contract. The average pay by position..I do think there will be some contract issues soon with the Giants though. It is what happens when you win and have good players..still better than losing and having a team of bad players though. seen enough of that..

Hey Urlacher, since Suggs makes more coin than you, why don't you hit him up for a loan>

May 14, 2008  11:53 AM ET

very talented player. But man, has anyone ever checked out the horse gums on this guy. He ugly!

May 14, 2008  01:00 PM ET

Wow, surely that remark won't be taken out of context, totally jive.

May 14, 2008  01:13 PM ET

Hey, i wish we had him on our team. Just stating the obvious.

May 14, 2008  02:41 PM ET

hey totally jive, were is your ugly mug at? This is the f-n reason blogers get the bad rap. Your an idiot!

May 14, 2008  02:56 PM ET

They better do all they can to keep this team together, he is the third best player on this defense behind Reed and Lewis!

"They better do all they can to keep this team together, he is the third best player on this defense behind Reed and Lewis!"

It's sad that Suggs is that mediocre. Ray is way better at dancing into the stadium than he is at doing his job on the field these days. A shadow of his former self!

May 14, 2008  03:24 PM ET

This just in, Raven's try to invent a way to win because they can't do it the normal way!

May 14, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Super A-nus,

Didn't realize bloggers get a bad rap. Chill. Just trying to have a little fun. Needed a break from work, and felt like picking on the Ravens.

I wouldn't take this crap too seriously. And i'm definitely better looking than Suggs.

Blog on brah!

May 14, 2008  03:44 PM ET

Well Eaglesye, the "shadow of his former self" had over 100 tackles and ANOTHER pro bowl berth last season.

FYI, he doesn't dance into the stadium anymore dude.

and, even if he was a shadow of his former self, isn't that still better than about 95 % of LB's out there ?

ray= 1st ballot HOFer and one of the best LB's EVER.
