Japanese club JEF United Chiba is reportedly lining up a bid to lure English national team striker Michael Owen to the J-League. Owen's negotiations with Newcastle have reportedly stalled, while other clubs, including Manchester United, have shown strong interest in signing the ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid star.

COME 2 THE GALAXY AND JOIN UR PAL BECKS

The salary cap will not allow the Galaxy to take on the type of salary Owens would command. I haven't heard anything about him coming over here but it would great to have him on some team in MLS. Don't really care where he goes, just jump the pond Owen!!

keep in mind the MLS changes it's rules on the fly!! Owen probably is too much but the fee he expects would be one that he earned 10 years ago, he's definately lost a step in my opinion. Still quality though.

I am currently watching Lost in Translation, and I approve of this move as long as Scarlett Johannsen is also there.

May 14, 2008  09:27 AM ET

If he doesnt stay in the EPL he should make the move to the MLS. I believe i read a 6-7mil GBP so that would be $12-15mil. Worth it?

May 14, 2008  09:38 AM ET

OK there is no way the Galaxy could afford Michael Owen. He is making 17 million pounds playing for Newcastle. That being said, this would be career suicide for Mikey. The J-league has very little money to throw around and he wouldn't be able to play for England anymore.

I think Mike should stick to English football. Whatever happened to the Man U rumors?

May 14, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Chiba is also at the bottom of the J-League - this isn't happening. I bet he stays at Newcastle.

May 14, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Galaxy can't afford him but what about NY? They sell Jozy and get Owen? Actually, I think I'd rather cheer for Jozy. And Lost in Translation was a horrible movie, but Murray was hilarious on the treadmill, "Help!!, Help!!"

No use. Flatlined.

May 14, 2008  12:13 PM ET

If he goes to Japan it's just for the money. The MLS wouldn't be a bad place for him now.

May 14, 2008  01:55 PM ET

As a Newcastle Fan, (in case the avatar doesn't give it away), I'd be upset to see him leave. However, as a New England Rev fan, I would love to see Owen and Twellman up front killing keeper's careers. However...no way Kraft would spend the money. Ahhh....dare to dream though.

May 14, 2008  02:11 PM ET

He's not leaving England. He still has some life in him if he can stay healthy. Maybe Japan or MLS in 7 years or so, but no way now.

I'm just waiting for another Scousers petition to transfer him back to us like Rafa almost did last summer.

nooooooooooooooooo dont leave newcastle! ive loved owen and i would hate to see him fall of the planet like he would if he joined jleague or mls

May 14, 2008  03:26 PM ET

I'm a big fan (the proud owner of a autographed Umbro boot), would love to see him at Man U were he would shine.

May 14, 2008  03:52 PM ET

Owen fell off the planet a while back. Maybe MLS is what his career needs. He'll regain his superstar status and be closely watched by Capello.

May 14, 2008  03:56 PM ET

i also heard that Ronaldinho is coming to play for the Chinese national team.
this is the biggest $#!+ ive ever heard. No international soccer star, no matter how much theyve lost is ever going to play in Japan. This is one of the stupidest rumors ive ever heard. When you are in your late 20s starting for the British national team and your name is not David Beckham, you dont go wasting your career by playing for a sucky team in the J league or any other league. This would be like him transfering to a division 3 english team. It would be one thing if he was thinking about the MLS or something but he needs to wait for like 5 years before that would be a good idea. If he does come he better not come to the Galaxy, because they get all of the stars, but the rest of their team sucks. I do think he needs to leave newcastle though, Man United would be great for him.

May 14, 2008  04:28 PM ET

If he's interested in playing every once and awhile or as a second half sub, then I guess Manchester United but I can't see him wanting to come back to Old Trafford.

May 14, 2008  04:28 PM ET

He would be behind Rooney, and Tevez which is why I'm unsure if Manchester United is the best place for him now.

May 14, 2008  07:43 PM ET

"He's not leaving England."

what makes you so sure Jackie? Owen is a good player, not a great player. True, if he does go to the J-League, it will be for the money. But why would he want to go to a country and embrace such a culture shock in Japan so late in his career? Doesn't add up...

If United put in a bid for him, I hope he is content coming off the bench around the 75 min mark in the games he does play in...

J. Hova, what do you mean come back to Old Trafford?

He would be behind all those you mentioned plus Saha. But i'm pretty sure Saha is out in the summer. A fit Saha is the best striker on United. I can't see SAF getting another injury prone striker...
