Suns want to talk to Jackson

For those pushing for Tom Chambers, Eddie Johnson, Dan Majerle or Vinny Del Negro to be the next coach of the Suns, their horses didn't make it through day one of the Suns' first full-fledged search in decades. One person Kerr does want to talk with is longtime NBA point guard and current broadcaster Mark Jackson, who was believed to be the front-runner for the New York Knicks job until D'Antoni swooped in and agreed to a four-year, $24 million deal on Saturday. Jackson told the Tribune on Monday that the Phoenix job would interest anyone, including himself.

Now this is getting serious, they are actually considering Mark Jackson for a head coaching position???

May 14, 2008  07:57 AM ET

Help Wanted.
NBA Coach.
Salary Range - $1 to $4 million/year
No experience necessary.

where's Kurft Rambis? Mark Eaton? and that other big dummy...Koncak!!! They should give coaching a try

May 14, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Mark Jackson is probably a good candidate.
Forget the strange twist of fate involving the Knicks, who have ties to Jackson, and where D'Antoni ended up.
Kerr is smart to go after Jackson, assuming that he has good coaching abilities.

What the hell is goin on in Phoenix? They have a veteran ball club that aspires to win a title and they are going to bring in a rookie head coach?

Let's see how that flies with Shaq.

May 14, 2008  08:42 AM ET

Let's not get overworked just yet.
Kerr wants to find out how good Jackson is by talking to him. It's just a preliminary step!
It's not as if the Suns are giving him a carte-blanche offer right off the bat. There IS an interview and application process.

That'll teach NYK to hire your coach (LOL)

May 14, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Once the team fails to win a championship in the next few years, Shaq will walk away from the team, but not before he bashes the players and staff.

May 14, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Hahaha a Vinny Del Negro sighting

May 14, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Huh? they are going to bring in a rookie coach to coach all the Sun's veterans? If so, Kerr is not looking as smart as everyone thought.

May 14, 2008  10:49 AM ET

I don't like Jackson in Phoenix either, but it's a better opportunity than the Knicks would have been.

oh boy

How about giving Dumas, Ceballos, KJ, EJ, Simmons a chance at coaching...

Missing persons report: texasmade.

If you know his whereabouts please contact the San Antonio Police Department. If he has empty prescription bottles on his person, call the paramedics immediately.

Mark Jackson isn't the guy for Phoenix. It's either Chicago, St. John's (in my dreams anyway) or nothing for Mark.

I think KJ might have other things on his mind right now, like running for governor.

Bad situation for Jackson. He needed somewhere to learn, like NY. Phoenix is in win-now mode and Jackson has zero experience. While I'm at it, Chicago's a bad fit, too: Paxson's too dumb to get him players that actually fit together. He should stay behind the mic for another year or maybe take an assistant coach position somewhere.

May 14, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Why would he take an assistant coaching position when he's beinf offered a head coaching job. Have you ever heard of OJT. The big question should be why does everyone think he will be such a great coach? What are they basing it on?

Seriously, is anyone intimidated by "The Lone Star State"? Wow, that just scares the bejuses out of people I bet.

Tim Duncan is the best PF to ever play the game. But my god that dude does some crying on the court huh. Any call the Spurs get called against them you can bet Tim Duncan is crying to the refs.

You think Pop-a-zit, er uh popavich has the troops ready on just 1 days rest? That old team may need more than that. has popavich ever heard of Proactiv?
